I just bought a cold steel UWK in carbon V steel with a 6 1/2 blade. I haven't recieved it yet then I found this website and saw the mixed reviews for cold steel so now i'm wondering. Did I mess up getting it or not? I ordered a sheath from survivalsheath.com who I think makes good sheaths and I want to find someone to replace the nappy rubber handle with something better but I like the basic knife. Any one know anybody who does good handle replacement work? And anyone with any input on the UWK?
I will be useing this knife for only three things... to kill men, skin deer, and slice tomatoes... not necessarily in that order (i hope)

Hopefully not. ;)

Cold Steel's Carbon V is generally OK. I can't speak from experience about the UWK directly, but the SRK is a pretty good knife - sturdy and inexpensive. THe UWK has the most attractive blade shapre of all of CS's knives, IMHO, and it seems from the grind that it is less of a sharpen prybar than some of their other stuff.

Thanks Will, yeah; that was my opinion of it also. I just wanted a cheap but well made knife that I could use for about everything in the area of camping, hunting and general tool wise as an all arounder.

I think the Cold Steel Carbon V versions of the SOG bowie and Black Bear Classic are very good value for the money. The Black Bear Classic is a nice design but in my opinion way too expensive for a knife made from AUS8 steel. Ditto for the SOG knives.

I would have prefered metal handguards on both of these knives, but the integral Krayton ones are adequate to prevent the hand from sliding forward.

I have one of the older stainless ones. Not a bad knife really. Sharpens easy enough and cuts like a knife should. Not a good chopper though. The blade is thinner than say the SRK that I have. All in all a pretty decent knife.
