My 11-year old son is wanting a tomahawk or hatchet to use while camping etc. and also for learning to throw. Can anyone direct me to a good book or instruction video to learn about the art? He's ready to buy something right away, but I'm wanting him to learn about it some first. While on the subject, what would be a good first purchase that isn't too expensive, but also not so cheezy that it won't work for him. I'll probably make a purchase for one myself so we can both learn together.

Sorry for asking what I'm sure many have already asked, but I couldn't find a FAQ section that addresses this. Thanks

Harry McEvoy's book on Knife & Tomahawk Throwing is all I've seen about how to throw. It's about $4 and has some great pics of Skeeter Vaughn from back in the heyday. I have one of Skeeter's original throwing hawks. I'll post some pics.

i found a good camp hawk for youngsters is a CS TrailHawk, might want to cut the handle down to about 16" for him. with the hammer poll he can help drive tent stakes. for my 8yr old son i started him off with a sounding axe from Forestry Supply co. ~10" and close to a pound it is too light for firewood, but:
1: he learns how to handle an axe.
2: he cuts the kindling sticks for the fire.
3 pounds the stakes for the tent.
4: it fits his hands well for control.

for a throwing hawk look into the CS and Crazy Crow Co. models of throwing hawks. look at the "Squaw Hawks", made for smaller hands, good starter hawks. have fun!

My son started throwing at 8 years old while we were at a Rendevous Gun Show. It took him about a half dozen attempts before he started sticking it.

I did as deserthawk said. I had a Trail Hawk I got off ebay then went to Crazy Crow and got a couple of Mouse Hawks for him and the larger hawks for myself. The Crazy Crow hawks are made in India but they served us well and we still use them almost 2 years later. Get a couple of extra handles too.

You'll need to cut the handle down. Start at 16" then adjust as needed. I throw a handle between 14"-15" long. Start at about 7 paces. It's really pretty easy especially if you can get someone to show him.

We have a large maple round in the back that we throw at. My son now throws knives, large nails, screwdrivers and even small garden shovels. We found that the 7" Old Hickory butcher knife makes a decent thrower.

Maybe get your purchase started now so you don't lose interest. Crazy Crow won't set you back much and they ship fairly quickly.

Check Elite Tactical for deals on Cold Steel hawks. I get mine there to do my customizing. I have another Trail Hawk and a Rifleman's due in any day now.

You and your son can design your own during the weekends. I've posted these on an earlier topic. Have a look.
