hi all.
i decided a week or so ago that i "needed" a new knife. well...i quickly stumbled across this site and about 30 hours of research later....here i am all registered.

when i started, i did not know i wanted a custom knife. now, i am sure of it. i have always liked knives, since i was a kid. but honestly, i have never owned a fixed blade knife (the survival knife i got mail-order when i was kid does not count) and certainly, this is my first custom knife pursuit.

this site is great. i have been a fly on the wall...learning...digesting...cross-referencing. i now have at least some sense of what i want. i would want a "bushcraft" type of knife; however, not in the strictest sense. i have read posts that define a bushie as something with a 4-5" blade. i am looking for that style of knife but with a smaller blade 3.5"...3 5/8"...something like that. i want it to be 1/8" thick and O1 tool steel. however, i am still learning on the steel types so would be happy to hear feedback on that.

i should probably stop and tell you what i would use the knife for. mostly, i suppose it would be a utility knife. some might also call it an EDC knife (i learned that!). but, with that said, i would want it to have a full size handle and be beefy enough that it could do camp chores, etc. e.g. i would want it beefy enough to baton wood with it, but i am guessing since the blade length is small, then really....we would be talking about wrist-sized limbs.

as i said, i have spent many hours "shopping" and i think i have even narrowed my search down to some specific makers. here is who i am looking at (other makers, if you have something that sounds like a match, please send my way):
Laconico, Backwoods, Fiddleback, and i like the Bushcraft Northwest Celilo knife. i also like Off the Map and Koyote.

from what i have read, the above makers are all recommended. and, i am sure that there are many other makers out there that i am missing. and, many make good knives. so, if i am parting with my money, i am also looking for "good dudes"....guys i would be proud to do business with.

i see so much that i like. but obviously, i am unable to hold any of these knives in my hand...and therein lies the problem.

so instead, i am relying on you. i am looking for any recommendations on any of the makers listed above (or other). and particularly...any personal anecdotes or interaction you may have would be appreciated.

also, since i am new....if this post is not in the right spot (or whatever)....please let me know. i am still trying to be a sponge.

Come on out to the shop. We'll make one together and you can take it home with you. I'm only about 25 minutes outside of Burlington. 15 if you drive like I do ;)

Nice, Derrick! When you feel that nibble, give it a tug. ;)

TPVT: You have the opportunity for a life-changing event. Take it. I've been to Dick's shop, and there is no one better-suited to teach.

Well geez....that was easy. Wulf...i would def like to check that out. shoot me a PM with details. thanks.

They're right . I bought a KFU mini nessmuk a couple of weeks ago and it's great. The price was right so I jumped on it. But I would love to find a maker in my area that I could work with to design one of my own. If anyone knows of someone in N. Texas I'd really appreciate it.

Wulf is the go to guy just for his post. You will be able to learn many years worth of searching in the time you take making the knife. You will be able to tweak the design as you go- especially the handle, and see your creation come to life before your eyes as you want, with the experience of a maker steering you away from Impracticalities or poor choices.

That being said and encouraged- I have knives from Koyote and Fiddleback from your list. Both are great knives, and great makers. Koyote will be more of the custom specific to you route as Fiddleback has stopped taking orders and you have to buy already made from the forum or his dealers. This means you might get a knife quicker from Fiddleback, but it might not be the exact configuration you are looking for. Koyote has a more rustic look to his blades, while Fiddlevack has a more individual handle look. Both makers have a distinct style of their own, their knives seem to be well received/moved when offered on the secondary market. It seems like there are more Fiddleback knives for sale here on the exchange, but to me it seems like most are flipped without being used. Fewer Koyote, but those seem to be put through their paces more. If that is a plus or minus is up to you- I prefer to buy used second hand knives as I use them anyways, so why pay the premium for a pristine knife I am going to devalue- although I have no problem using a mint knife if I want to.

I have heard only positives about your other choices, but have no first hand experience with the makers. Another maker of great user knives I have developed a relationship with over the past year is Alan Davis (Aland on Bladeforums). I have 5 of his knives, and while my fixed blades from him are a bit smaller than what you are looking for, I have no doubt he would treat you right. Great quality materials, finishes, and a gentleman to deal with.

To sum it up:
1)Take Wulf's offer!!
2)Check out the exchange (for sale: customs-Maker and individual)
3)Phone the guys you are interested in and talk to them about what you are after- they can discuss price, features, wait etc. all makers I've talked with are glad to talk knives, I'm sure you will be well set up!

Be warned, hard to stop at just one!!!
Welcome aboard, and don't forget to update us on how things go for you, always room for another long term member on BF.

Tried. Didn't work... says you're not set up to receive PMs. Feel free to shoot me a PM or email instead if you prefer.

Thanks CLAK...appreciate you taking the time to respond so thoughtfully.

and, i gotta tell ya....i am so impressed with this forum so far. i sent Ray (Laconico), Bill (Backwoods) and Mike (BCNW) messages just this morning, and i have already heard back from all 3 of them.

AND...to top that, i have found a local knifemaker (or vice versa) who is willing to work with me. thanks wulf.

feeling good.

ha....sorry about that Wulf. i'll look into that. in the meantime, expect a PM shortly.

Curly white maple if I remember correctly. But then again I could be wrong. Curly white something lol. Yes he is a part time knifemaker who is the apprentice to bill. Great ergos, comfy handle and a wicked full convex and antique finish. I love his stuff. And he usually ends up being about 1/2-5/8 the price of some of the other makers you mention, not all of course. Also I'd recommend the fiddleback hiking buddy. They are almost exactly the same length total with a little more handle on the fiddleback and a little more blade on the kfu.
