I'm new to the wonderful world of knives and had a couple of questions. First of all I've bought a couple (cheaper) knives previously and was wondering what the best method for keeping a good edge on them is. Secondly, I am wanting to have a knife made but have noticed there are many choices on blades. How does one pick a good one. I want an strong blade (i.e.-puncture and cut a can of vegetables) and one that will keep a sharp edge. Any help would be appreciated.
 
I suggest you start by following the TUTORIALS/FAQ´s linc at the top of the page, read the FAQ´s on steel and on sharpening, and follow the linc to the Knowledge Base. You may end up with more questions (or at least more specific questions) but that´s the way it is.
