Today I received a small package with some small items in it. An alox Victorinox Classic and two Leathermans. I like it how thin an small the Classic is, nice keychain tool. The Leathermans are nice too, but of course quite a bit heavier. The Classic weighs 16g, the Squirt P4 weighs 55g and the Squirt S4 weighs 52g.

So which one is on your keychain?

The new Leatherman Style (23.1g) is a bit more comparable in weight to the 58mm Swiss army knives.

I have one of those Squirt P4s on my keys, and it's great. I might get a Squirt PS4 for the scissors. I also might get which one is the one that looks like a miniature skeletool.

I currently have the Victorinox Ambassador on the keychain, but maybe I'll swap it for the Squirt S4. It is smaller than the Ambassador, but its scissors are bigger and scissors are a useful tool in an urban environment.

Do note that the Squirt S4 (and the P4) were discontinued earlier this year. Still lots of them around but don't leave it too long. The new Style CS and the good old Micra are the current options.

Although a huge fan of the Leatherman Micra since 1997, I have always thought there was room for improvement. The tweezers are too thin, although I have used them successfully a number of times. A larger problem; it isn't very hand friendly. There are too many sharp edges, not only making it uncomfortable in use, but can wear pocket fabric. Several of my jeans small pockets have frayed patches or holes in them from wear associated with the sharp screw heads. This hasn't been a deal breaker for me because the same angularity applies to the screwdrivers, making them high performing implements of that size in a keychain tool. That, plus good scissors, sort of sealed things for me.

Still, I was hoping the Squirt models would incorporate my hoped-for improvements, and actually, they have in the two areas I mentioned. Their contours are much refined, and the tweezer is more functional. That's great, but I have found the S4 scissors do not cut as well, at least on the materials I encounter, the drivers are less squared off, like on SAKs, and the outside opening implements (nice) don't allow for extension (not so nice), except for the phillips. In the end, I gave my S4 to the wife (BTW, she likes it, hates the Micra, go figure) and I reverted to the Micra. I don't have much of an opinion about the P4. It looks like a good tool, but the pliers are too small for my purposes. My idea of small pliers still useful is the Juice.

It is doubtful, from its present offerings, that Leatherman will refresh the Micra in a direction I would prefer, so I am glad it remains in production as is.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. That new Style CS looks nice too.
