Hello.
I’m new and was directed here by my online search for a knife, one of many, that my father left. He passed and his safe’s were full of military stuff (gun’s, knives, etc…). He retired back in 1976, after a few tours in Vietnam; he did 23 years and served all over Asia, between 1955-1959 he was in Japan, after WWII, then he was in Vietnam several times. The knife was wrapped in one of his old SF shirts, with a bunch of other SF stuff, several bayonets. I was looking at another post about this knife but then the subject kind of fell off, ended I guess.
Anyway, the knife is an original Al Mar SERE, made in Seki Japan, by some Japanese knife makers whom I won't even pretend to know how to say or remember how to spell their names. It is in mint condition, never used and the sheath is looks new. It has the SF unit crest embossed into the knife and the sheath, and AL MAR and his Chinese trade mark stamped into the blade. The words Seki-Japan are stamped in the base of the balde too.
My mom says my dad put the knife there, best she remembers, sometime after he retired. I think a few years after he retired. He use to attend SF meetings for years after he retired, up to around the time when 911 happened, then he didn’t go to meetings as much.
From what I can find this knife appears to be vintage rare, collectable. Of course, it’s an heirloom to me, I mean it was my dad’s. One of his bud’s from that time period also has one, and it’s mint too. He’s old and has Alzheimer’s so he really can’t shed any light on the knife to me. I emailed his son, who was in the Army, and he say’s it’s a very rare knife, and he has his insured for $2500.00 with USAA. He said that he knows that several members of the old SF group had/has them, but that’s all he knows. I want to add this to my insurance policy, but I’m tryng to figure out exactly what the value would be. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I did email Al Mar company, but haven’t heard back, yet.
I haven’t figure out how to upload pictures to my post, yet. Sorry.
