Hello to All, been a while since I have been to this site... I’m getting into blacksmithing and picked up my 1st anvil... I was told it was unmarked. The anvil has excellent rebound and ping to it. It was painted at some point before I got it. I need to clean up the paint to better see marking I have found since getting it home... If it has hardened top face plate possibly not much can be done to its face but use as is. But if it cast steel body and face it could reshaped...? Any thoughts on condition and possible maker...

Here’s another image of the side. It shows some writing that I can’t see well, plus what looks Like the English weight standard? Have a look let me know what you think...

Closest I can think of, using "Anvils in America" pg. 80 as reference, could be a "London Shape, Mouse Hole anvil.

But that anvil is pretty weathered to do more than guess.

Ok thanks, I’m trying to discover how this particular anvil is made. If it is cast steel it can be reshaped, yes? If it has a hardened steel face, well looks like she’s a bit tired. Missing all that material near the horn...

IF it's a mousehole, it's piece welded together, with hardened face added. But I'd guess that was some time ago, before it served as a garden ornament.

I always thought that those square holes underneath and at sides are handling holes for when anvil is being forged

Looks like an old Mousehole. Those are forged from chunks of wrought iron forge welded into a larger mass, with a steel top plate forge welded on. Whether it rings or not matters little compared to what the rebound is from the top. Take a steel bearing, or at least a light hammer, and drop onto the face, let bounce back up freely. You want somewhere from 70% to 95% percent return to the height it was dropped from.
