New appreciation for the BATAC

This thing is warming on me. It's only taken about 18 months.

I'm glad no one snagged it when it when FS a while ago. I pulled it b/c it's one of my last snakeskin knives and it matches my tan/snake FBM.

But it's growing on me b/c I'm over the "blade-to-handle" ratio issues. I don't care if the handle is 33x longer than the blade. It's what is needed. Plus the TAC handle on it is great.

THEN, I do some throwing yesterday. Guess which knife stuck more than all the others - including the balanced throwing knife.

Hmmmmm.

(Second place was a satin DM. What a cool knife that is as well. :) )

I'm seeing the BATAC as a mini-skinny-ASH1 at this point. I can see it's usefulness more. Wish I bot more at store pricing. LOL

yea they are amazing knives. in my sons care package i sent him a batac le. He loves it. Especially the longer handle. If it is a user than who cares about that. i could see people not liking it if it was a safe queen. but when your in the dessert and you got gloves on. im sure the longer handle is perfect. I mean these knives were made for that reason. Combat! I absolutly love the Batac and the Ash. So it is good to hear someone that can see the length difference and still likes it. Maybe it will just take time for it to grow on more people. but you got to give it a chance.
Well there is my 2 cents. Thanks yall

I am planning to use a BATAC (CG) again for antelope hunting next month. I found it to be the perfect size for dressing. It sliced and chopped quite well. Not too small, and not too big. It was one of those "just right" things.

Did you say snake and tan? Now there's a coincidence!

The finish on my BATAC is a bit more worn than that one. LOL 'Course the board definitely looks like it lost the fight. ;)

I never noticed the handle was long. Feels great to me. I took it to the desert with me last time, and planning to do so again next year. Don't plan to need it, but rather have it and not use it then need it and not have it. :)

i was having a hard time throwing them. i spent a long time working on throwing the BATAC and still never got very good at it, but i loved the size for a thrower

For me BATAC is a perfect all around knife. It's not too big and not too small. It does many things well. Due to the fact that it's flat ground and the fact that the edge is quith thin (as for one of Busse knives of course:D) a BATAC is able to slice quite well. I use mine all the time during woods hikes, and for example I cut mushrooms with it (to see if ther's no worms inside) and it actually cuts them and not breakes them apart. BATAC is also big enough for small chopping. Quite long handle with swell in the middle allowes a good grip for chopping. I was suprised really how well you can chop with such not big knife. Some people hate Tac handle. In my opinion you have to get used to it, and after doing some work with Tac handled knife - many will love it - at least it was like this in my case.
Here's a pic of my BATAC from the time when it was almost new and shiny:

Yes, the BATAC is just about a perfect blade. I didn't think I'd miss mine, but I do!

Still-maybe I can find one of those ergo Badgers some day...I imagine it would be "just right' for me, as my other ergos have been!!:D

JMHO, but I think that the BATAC is one of the most underrated production models that have been offered since I started using/collecting Busse knives... About 2 years now. :) Personally, I like them a heckuva lot, and for anything needing less than a FBM, I find myself reaching for one first. Especially this user, which I just touched up the outstanding edge on. A few light whacks after on this stick left behind cuts almost as smooth as if I'd sanded them with 1500 grit... which is what I touched the edge up with. It makes a great seriously handy, hard use, versatile knife!

I was asking about the BATAC on the Scrap Yard forum and Horn Dog told me it was bulkier than the S6...I just don't see it in the photos?? I imagined it having more in common with my Swamp Rat SAR...a 4" + blade, tough but very good for carry. Thoughts please?? Please with pork and cheese on top??!!

underrated? i don't think so. people have been gobbling these things up on the exchange and other places. they're rather popular

They're becoming rather popular. Not to say that many weren't sold when they were offered or anything because many were and folks were excited to see the Bager offered again, but after they were pulled from the site and the last one sold from the Store, those that were listed just sort of sat there on the Exchange for a while, and for near original cost. So now they are again on the rise & starting to get the respect they have deserved all along. And yes, I think that they are still somewhat underrated... The quiet workhorse Busse knife that excels at many different tasks. No flash, all substance! :)

...Unless ya put some snakeskin micarta on it! :D
