Just want to say how much I enjoy this website, and this sub forum in particular. I have lurked here off and on over the past year but only recently registered as a member. The weather has kept me inside more than I would like this winter so I have spent a lot of time on here. I have quite a few knives (not near as many as some of you) that I have acquired over the past but never "collected" them. Just bought one every now and then if it looked like something I would use, or received them or was handed down from family. I have maybe 7 or 8 of my grandfather's knives also. All my knives are users and that's how I like them....broken in but in good shape. It is great to see so many wonderful knives posted on here and I have learned a hell of a lot from reading your discussions. Looking forward to many more years of enjoying bladeforums.

Welcome! I don't collect knives either (as in, have a specific goal or pattern to it), I just have bought too many. :( If a collection happens to emerge from the chaos, then I guess that's OK.

Thanks jc. Yeah, I have a little of everything, but not much of anything. Mostly fixed blade hunting knives and traditional folders, but also a few "outdoor" knives and even 3 or 4 "modern" folders. I like just about anything with a blade.

Guys, I can tell you from my own experience that this is exactly how most of us got started. Going from flower to flower like a hungry bee, looking everywhere and gathering here and there. Before you know it, you will indeed have a small collection. Then you can decide to broaden your interests or narrow them. I've carried and used knives for more than half a century, but never spent much time thinking about them. Then I decided to try something different. And teh more I tried, the more I looked around and the greater variety I saw. And while pristine new knives are great to collect for the sake of collecting, IMHO, the best knives are the ones we bought used, or bought new and started using ourselves. I guess what I am saying is that if you have more than one or two, use them or not, you are already on your way to being a collector as well as a knife user. Welcome aboard! Enjoy the ride!

Do any of us actually "collect" knives, I tend to see most of us going from one knife to another and eventually you have enough that you just start referring to it as a collection because it sounds more politically correct than "Pile-O-Knives" or whatever you want to call it.

Yes. Of my three most favorite brand/patterns, I have several dozen of one, more than 30 of another and had more than 30 of the third before a recent theft cut that down to about a dozen or so. I don't use all of those, I collected them to have examples of variations of the patterns that were made over the years. And of my many much older knives, I seldom use any of those, some dating back to the late 1800's. They've earned their rest. And then there are the customs, mostly made on antique patterns. I have to use them all at least a few times to appreciate the designs and the work that went into them. That only leaves me with several dozen users to rotate between depending on tasks and my mood. Of course all of my kitchen knives are antiques as well. Some of those date to before WWII and a couple before WWI. Good working knives that work as well as they ever did for my mother and grandmother.

Thanks for the welcomes. "Pile of knives" is right, Bob. A month or so ago, I decided to dig out my box of knives and also went through some drawers to gather them all in one pile. Found a few that I had forgotten about, some I hadn't seen in a couple of decades.

Welcome to the forum, Jack!

And I'll let ya in on a little secret; I don't collect either. Somehow all those knives just sort of accumulated. Really!;)

Carl.

Welcome aboard, Jack! You'll not find a finer group of people on the web.

Hey, now.

My Daily Pair almost always consists of one knife from Pile A...

... and one knife from Pile B:

(No knives were dropped, dinged, allowed to slide into one another, or otherwise harmed in the posing of "Pile B." ;))

:D

Welcome, New Jack. :)

Welcome to Traditionals, Jack.

I have 43 different examples of the one pattern I do "collect," and the other couple hundred knives I've accumulated are just "experience." ;)

Nice to have another member! Of course part of the indoctrination is you buy us all a new knife. Gift cards are fine.

LOL. Welcome!
