I just received a few nice axe handles in the mail today. They have a wax finish on them and I want to remove it to add mt own finish.
I'm thinking of sanding them, using a heat gun and wiping the wax off and using something like turpentine to cut the wax finish.

So, help, what do you guys use to remove a wax finish?

My regards, Double Ott

M3, Thanks for your reply... I forgot to mention these are octagon shaped handles. I was hoping to find a easier way.

Yeah, that would be more of a pain. I remember reading somewhere about guys doing it with a heat gun, like you mentioned. Never tried it myself. I bet a torch would work too. I'll be interested to know how it works out.

So...are these the hickory handle store octagons??

Take care,

Matt

How to dissolve wax? I asked my chemist friend that question some years back. He replied, "Any non-polar solvent will dissolve wax."

So what the heck is a 'non-polar solvent'?

A common one you may have around the house is white gas or Coleman fuel. Dissolves wax lickety-split.

yeah thats what i was going to suggest... i use kerosene...

They aren't Hickory Handle Store handles, sorry. Thanks for the replies guys...I was guessing turpentine, I was kinda close...but I'll use some kerosene, I have around 40 gals stored for a rainy day. I also have around 6 gals of Coleman around here...I'm sure that one of them is already open.

Thank you again, Double Ott
