Good afternoon everyone! I have a problem that I believe most of you would be able to help me with. You see my father just lost his axe (a tragedy I know) that he has had for years and now cannot split wood for our barbeque! (an even BIGGER tragedy! D: ) now I am a bit knowledgeable on knives and machetes, but know virtually NOTHING about axes (you use the sharp metal part to hold right?) So can anyone tell me a good quality, but some what low budget axe that will only be used for firewood and the occasional zombie?

I like my collins axe, or you could go onto craigslist and get an vintage axe and restore it yourself. I've seen people giving them away, good luck.

Two options IMO

Go to a yard sale or flea market, and find an axe whose weight / handle feels right. Make sure the poll (back of the axe) isn't mushroom'ed, and the bit is relatively straight. Most often they won't have stamps, some will, but run a file over the edge and get a feel for the steel. That will tell you a lot about the quality. Then restore / rehandle / sharpen.

Buy a Council Tool axe online, modify a bit, and enjoy.

Pfff NOTHING beats the flavor of barbeque made with mesquite! And I have tried the list of Craig but it does not look like anyone around here (south Texas aka the middle of no where) gives away valuable axes :\ and thanks for the help Crazyotter! Think I'll just do one of the two suggestions ya put.

well depending on the size of the wood he is cutting I would look in to a fiskar Maul. They call it an axe but the head is different. It is similar to your standard axe but it has a bigger head and the taper is much bigger on it, kinda like an engine powered wood splitter head. this is what i use to split wood with, but your standard axe will suffice just as well.

If you are splitting smaller logs, just about any axe in my experience works well, just have to keep it honed right.

Lost his axe?? I'd be having a good look round .Retrace steps. Look in places where no axe would be.
Or was it pinched?

Buy a vintage axe off of ebay and restore it. Figure on spending $10 to $20 for a decent head on up to $1000 for something really special. Pick up a handle for another $10 and you're set.

Other options? Check you local estate sales - they're better ground than yard sales but you pay a bit more, too. Yard sales are the cheapest but you spend a lot of time looking at lightly soiled baby clothes and rotten furniture.

Option 3? Already suggested - Council Tools.

Check around and see if the local hardware store has a TrueTemper True American axe. Or was already noted, a Collins axe.

Yeah he took it to work one time (he's a driller for an oil rig) to make barbeque for his crew but he doesn't remember if he put it back in his truck, can't really go back now although I wouldn't doubt someone from another crew took it. But thanks for all the help guys!

What Pegs said ;)

I'll add that I would avoid the cheap hardware store Mexican made 'Collins' axes or the new TT axes made in China I guess.

'Friends don't let friends buy cheap foreign steel' :p

There are just to many nice vintage American made axes out there to fool with those cheap axes IMO!
