Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew how to preserve a new axe head. I am a firefighter and I have made a custom combo tool for my work. It has a 6 lb single bit axe head at one end and a hook at the other. It should work well but the axe head had to be stripped so now I have a shinny metal axe head that will begin to rust. I don't want to paint it because it will take some abuse and the paint will just chip off. Is there some way to tarnish or smoke the metal where it wont rust without painting it. Thanks, David.

In short no, keep it clean and oiled. Even the high end coatings come off really quickly with chopping and you would have to send the head out to get it treated.

Browning it sounds cool. Is that something I can do or does it have to be sent off? Where do you get the browning material? Thanks, David.

How long does it take to dunk it in a can of paint and then swing it gently into a stump (a half inch) ?

What I would do. It's supposed to be red. ;)

I have seen an old recipe for browning in I think Foxfire 5? But I think it is also avalible commercially.

you can get the browning solution from birchwood casey, they also make a blueing solution (gives it a deep blue/blackish color)

click on blueing on the top toolbar then click on metal treatments, scroll down to plumb brown if you want to brown it. If you use blue I suggest the perma blue paste in a tube. they also make easy to apply black finishes for brass and aluminum.
I don't visit the 'hawk forum often, so if you need any help or anything just shoot me an email at knrizzy@yahoo.com
