I bought a Jag from 1SKS just to see what the "Swing Thing" was all about. I started in at Clay's site at Level 1 Beginner and started the exercise regimen listed there.
I have two cuts on my right index finger, one on my ring finger. My knuckles and finger bones are pretty roughed up. The knife has been dropped a few times and is probably having nowhere near the fun I am.
My impression is that everyone should try this. If only for a week. And anyone looking to get into them for the first time, here's my meager advice from rookie to rookie:
1> Don't start with an expensive one unless you don't mind beating the crap out of something expensive.
2> Use a practice knife with a blade that isn't too sharp. I bought the partly serrated blade, and the cuts are ragged and don't want to heal. I'm filing this baby down to spoon sharpness.
3> www.balisongxtreme.com is very helpful. Don't try anything fancier than the exersises listed in Beginner Level 1. You will hurt yourself, the knife, and your immediate surroundings.
4> Do each exercise with both hands. I find that my dexterity is improving equally with both, even though I am right hand dominant. It is good training for "the other hand".
Clay, Gollinick, the rest of you SOB's, you win. I can only forsee gallons of blood and hundreds of dollars shed in my near future. I won't give up until I'm doing Clay's double bali machine gun routine in the bathtub safely. I hope you're happy.
