Just got her in the mail, the new Laci Szabo Design balisong made by Fred Perrin! Here's a couple of pics:

and compared to a standard sized Dobruski:

Nice little knife! Very slim in construction, with even a smaller feel than the BM30 series. Interesting though, when open and held in hand it feels incredibly stable and actually formidable! The top and bottom tang protrude to form a guard, the top is grooved where the bottom is left smooth. The design is very well thought out.

Now the shape of the knife; the handles of the Szabo fit *perfectly* in the hand. It's actually a little strange to handle this knife for a while, then to go to a straight handled knife...the straight handle bali feels a bit primitive by comparison! With the very thin and different design, though, this is not the bali for all your favorite finger twirls, etc. It is definitely not meant to be.

I really like the Szabo bali; it might be *the* knife to carry when light weight and size are important as it has virtually no weight in the pocket. Really cool toy!

....very nice! How does it swing? I've been thinking about one my damn self.........:)

If you don't mind how much was it? I had only seen the one with the 6inch blade for 400. Is this bali up on the web site?

I hadn't seen the little guy.., only the "Monster"

I'd also be interested in how they handle...and if you've ever swung the big guy??

Thanks for the nice pictures and the size reference!

It handles quite well, though very different (Newtonian physics in an Einsteinian universe :) ).It really is very thin, with no scales, so many twirls and such using the side of the handle are difficult; but make no mistake about it, this knife was built for cutting. When open it follows the contour of the hand perfectly!

I'd really like to try the big one!! :)

Have to see that one when I come down in December maybe...

I've always been a fan of Perrin and Szabo's designs.. and from looking at some - it's very hard to rally "define" their principles but I can totally see this as being a real ergonomic knife with definite purpose in design.. it's not made to look fancy or 'dance' but look intimidating (instead of seductive).. trademark szabo and perrin for sure =)

excellent excelent. great for superhero wannabe's (like myself)
How is the fit and finish? From what i gather it is NOT a perrin handmade t's done by a second (and thrd) party.

Nice post Chefget. Is that a clip on the right side of the handle? I see some similarities in the blade/handle alignment with the Spyderco Masaad Ayoob (although this Szabo bali is like a swing version of the Ayoob on steroids). For those interested in this design, the Ayoob may be a more "civil" and legal (where balisongs are prohibited) alternative. I'm not saying this to "dis" the Szabo bali--on the contrary, I think it is awesome. Good thinking in posting the side-by-side comparison with the Dobruski it really put things in perspective. BTW, I wish the blade on the BM 43 was more like that of your Dobruski (with less upsweep at the point).

Thats the knife I was drooling over and asking info about 1 or 2 weeks ago :)

They look so COOL! I really want one, but they ain't cheap :(
