Hey all! Any gaucho knife fans or bark river fans out there might want to know I started a discussion with Mike Stewart from bark river on the bark river production schedule Facebook page about making a gaucho bark river knife. Mike stated he would love to make one but didn’t think there would be the demand out there. I said I would drum up some interest from the community for him, a few of the production schedule group member where keen to get behind it with me.
We all know bark river knives are exceptional here I hope and if you haven’t had the opportunity to handle and use a gaucho knife then I can tell you they are a fantastic , field/work/utility/ bbq and general use blade. Essentially the South American Bowie knife they where a mans only tool in many cases and used to hunt live and defend one’s existence in the wild.
So who’s keen ??

Well Mikes yet to design it, and his version will be his. There are a lot of small differences in traditional designs, ( I doubt mike will make a metal handle version for example ) let me grab a link or 2 and I pop up some examples of existing styles.

Id love gaucho knife from Bark river, but hope its not too thick like most of their knives.Id love it in flat grind too.

I’ve found on the thinner spined versions ( like the new puukko I got ,the convex is great , I have a lot of handcrafted japanese chef knives and so know the value of thin flat found or chisel grind knives. But my new puukko is awesome in its ability to food prep I was surprised.

Puukko looks good in pics, but havent seen it in person.

Oh it’s absolutely lovely. I got mine in a sexy walnut burl. Weight is just back a bit in the handle which is interesting as it makes the knife feel very solid in the hand but keeps the blade so lively and nimble. The profile of the convex is better than I imagined in application of tasks ( thinly sliced the pork jowl for my hibachi grill so nicely) carved up a nice spoon , the tip is very well executed and I like the belly line a lot more than I though I would. Perfect length blade for a utility belt knife

I respect that , though I bet you could be converted after a good trip with one
Maybe, but I wouldn't spend $300+ to find out. I have more knives than I know what to do with them. I bet I have 50 knives in my office alone and many more stored elsewhere.

Well 50+ knives is a nice problem to have really haha. Yeah I have sold off a lot of my collection the last 2 years to slim down to knives that I use and knives that I want to get through re-financing my old collection. I kept 1 or 2 antiques for the shelf though. Ps you can very well made and affordable gaucho knives from Argentina/Uruguay quite cheap made from German steel if your curious. They only issue is they are built too robust quite often thick behind the edge and if too long they aren’t as useful

Always liked the smaller version of a gaucho knife, Boker ( think they made an actual gaucho knife in Argentina ) and a few other german make a small hunter that looks similar but not quite along the traditional gaucho lines. I would not want the price point to get too high. I would be reluctant to actually using it if too high, and do not want another cool safe queen.

You can buy the real deal dirt cheap, why pay extra ?
