New Barlow...sort of

Well, a couple weeks ago I posted a question about acquiring a new Barlow knife. I received several responses and some guidance that helped me make a decision. I was able to find a new John Russell Barlow, made in Germany, that looked like a fairly solid knife so I bought it, or so I thought. The one I purchased had a main spear point blade but the one that arrived was a clip point. The knife is new but not the one I bought. After a series of emails the guy said he must've gotten his pictures mixed up as he had sold a Russell a couple of months ago. He's offered to refund my money but I think I'll sleep on it tonight and see if this one grows on me. If I kept it that's always an excuse to buy the one I want when I find it.

I think you'll find there isn't much difference between a clip and spear of the same length. In my usage, the spear gives a wider blade to spread condiments if you use your knife at lunch, and the clip has a narrower tip to get into tight areas. The edge belly profile is often very much the same. I prefer the clip.

How about a picture so that we can talk you into it? :)

I would but I only use an iPad and don't have the photo software I think I'd need to put a photo up.

My daughters told me I should just keep it and it wasn't overly expensive so I think I will. Blades are tight and sharp, it opens and closes with a solid snap so it seems like a decent quality knife. It's going to be an everyday knife to share time with my Old Timer and Swiss Army Knife.

But after poking around on this forum I have a feeling there may be one or two more in my future...

That's a really cool clip/spear comparison shot, Jeff!:thumbsup::cool: I've never thought to just do an overlay like that.
(FWIW, I prefer the spear. ;))

I hope you enjoy your new knife,I bet you will find a spearpoint model in the future.

I think you are right about more knives in your future, especially if you hang around here!

"Thanks for the hint GT, what I saw first (on a small phone screen, that's my excuse ) was a spear blade with a very cool swedge":D

Same here, my first thought was: I've never seen a blade like that. Especially on a Buck!

The technologically challenged part of me has figured it out! I did notice one thing on the knife. If you look closely at the arrow, specifically the bottom, the last line on the fletching wasn't finished. Not to much of a concern....I've shot arrows that were missing part of their fletching from my recurves before and they did fine:)
