I just received my Buck Spitfire Maroon 722 in S35VN. Mine has slight vertical play which unfortunately has come to be expected. It opens smoothly and locks crisp. The vertical play is forced but there. The maroon color to me looks like anodized Victorinox red (Matte Red) but i really like it. To me this 722 feels like it has a slightly gripper texture than the previous Spitfire offerings. Cool knife IMHO.

looks good. is it maroon or a darker red? hard to tell on my phone. thanks.

It's a Damm shame Buck can't do something about that Play. And what I can't figure out is WHY some don't and some do? 🤔

My guess would be that it is a variance in the tolerance of the parts. I put together an AR-15 with parts sourced from different manufacturers and had trouble getting the upper and lower to go together. Gunsmith explained that it can happen, for a variety of reasons, when putting 'spec'ed' parts together...even from the same manufacturer. Preston

From what I have seen, vertical play, even slight, is common with lockbacks. From what I have gathered over the years, it is necessary for the lock to seat properly. No excuse for sloppy play, but a small amount is normal.

I've got 2 I need need to stop being lazy about and send back to Buck and see if something can be done? They both have S30v blades and look good but they both have very sloppy up and down play compared to the other722s I have, when opened. Will definitely let everyone know how they turn out 👍

That vertical play is not a mistake. It's a design feature. The "Accu-Torque" mechanism allows the user to increase pressure on the knife in a slow and more controllable manner before the edge fully engages and makes it's initial cut. The benefits are increased safety and accuracy.

Okay, none of that is true. But that's what I would go with if I was in the marketing department.

I really like the Swiss Army Knife RED on this model. Congratulations!
