New Bear MGC models look like Old Timers

I like BearMGC knives. Lots of knife for the money. I like wood handled knives as well and Bear has made some great oak handled ones. Made in USA I assume. Be some competition for Taylor.

So now we have Camillus, United, and Bear and Sons producing Sharpfinger patterns. I guess it is a complement on an enduring Schrade design.

Bear MGC has some really nice damascus blades with jigged bone handles too.

And according to this, they are 100% U.S. made, though they might be foriegn owned.

"Their new 41,000 square-foot plant is one of the most modern cutlery state-of-the-art facilities. They have a skilled and experienced work force capable of performing many of the extra hand operations that go into the making of their products. The Bear Cutlery factory is unique. It is fully self-contained. While some companies only assemble parts brought from various suppliers and put their names on the product, they do everything in-house, from building their own blanking dies to heat treating, grinding, assembly, and hand finishing their own products. These steps insure that Bear Cutlery is of excellent quality and a real value for both the dealer and consumer. This commitment to excellence was enhanced by the 1999 purchase of Bear Cutlery by Swiss Army Brands, Inc., Makers of Victorinox® The Original Swiss Army™ knife. ..... "

The stag on the minuteman is nice, but stainless? It would be nice to see someone get this right and make these patterns with stag and 1095, then we would have a real winner.

That is old information. It was bought back from Swiss Army Brands by one of the earlier investors. That is why the company is now Bear and Son.

Good deal. Thanks for the correction. Do they have their own company site?

IIRC,
MGC were the initials of the 3 guys who bought BEAR from Jim Parker and Fain Edwards. I think that's where the damascus steel was made for all the Parker knives (Alabama), as the Cap mentioned. Then along came Swiss Army Brands, who wanted the multitool/plier patents in the worst way. That's the older website Codger found. Then last year, Ken Griffey ( the G of MGC) bought the knife business back. Thus the newer site. Don't know about any other investors or the multitools....

I've had/used/sold/traded several Bear knives....they are a fair deal at a fair price, IMO. I have several now......one older trapper/razor with great stag, a zebra oak single blade that's nice, and several newer ones that are OK fit and finish wise. The damascus is a bit soft, as I recall. But, all in all, OK traditional knives. Don't know much about the tacticals and balis.....but at the price, especially the balisongs.....hard to be top notch, I would think. Still, I think the traditionals are an OK deal. JMO.
