New Benchmade 710 -- some side play in blade

I just got my new 710, and there is a tiny bit of side play in the blade when open. If I push the blade near the tang, I can fee the movement, and then it stops as the tang of the blade contacts the liner. Is this normal?

With my Spyderco Spin Etched, the lockup is complete. No side play at all.

Tighten the pivot with a torx driver. Almost every axis lock knife I purchased had bladeplay and needed to be tightened.

Ditto to tighten the pivot. I also use lokctite on the pivot screw. Just a drop.

thats weird every axis lock ive owned has had no blade play

Well they usually have no play at first, but they get loose pretty quick. It's no problem though, just put some blue loctite and tighten the pivot.

I've done this with 3 710's, a mini grip, 2 large grips, a 940 and a 943. The pivot gets loose if you don't loctite and tighten.

The 710 is obviously defective.
Please send it to me and I will dispose of it properly ;)

Shawn B. Thank you! I will gladly send it to you for disposal. I had no idea this service was available. Now if you'll just send me $200 to cover the postage...

I picked up the Husky 8-in-1 Torx screwdriver set from Home Depot for $5.97. Great bargain. Forgot to get blue Loc-Tite!

Anyway, I tightened the pivot screw, and the blade play went away, though the opening and closing was then not as easy as before. It looks like it's a bit of a delicate operation to get the screw just tight enough to eliminate blade play but not so tight as to bind when opening and closing. Loc-Tite is definitely called for so that when you get it just right, it'll stay there.

Another trick instead of using locktite is to use plumbers teflon tape. just a bit will ensure that the screw stays put without binding up.

It takes a little finesse that's for sure. A few tightenings and loosenings as you zero in on the sweet spot. And then when it's just right, put the knife down and let the Blue Loc-Tite dry overnight. I did this to my 710 about a year ago and after hundreds and hundreds of opening and closings, it's still right at the sweet spot, blade perfectly centered.:D
