New here but long time lurker. I have been reading here for sometime now and researching. I picked up a new blade today at the local Cabela's that I am quite happy with so far. Its a Benchmade mini griptilian plain D2 blade. I guess that I couldnt have had an idea how sweet this blade is without bringing it home. I love it ;) it opens with inertia like an auto and feels very good in my hand. I hope that I made a good decision buying it...seems very nice to me but I am a newbie as well.

The whole Griptilian line is a great value, and the Cabela's in D2 is a great choice! The axis lock is king IMO.

I don't have a mini-grip, but I have a 960 and I love the D2 blade. It is a great performer.

Thanks for the feedback. I have allot to learn here but really appreciate all the feedback. I have a Lansky sharpening system. I havent ever been good at freehand sharpening. Is this system going to be ok for my new Benchmade or should I graduate to a more refined system?

I like my Lansky just fine, but the clamp can (and will) scratch your blades if not careful. I don't like the set up time either. I don't have a Sharpmaker, but I'm going to buy one based on what I've read about it here on the forums. For now though, the Lansky does exactly what it claims, and I get consistent good results with it.

A little masking tape on the blade flats before you attach the clamp should prevent any scratches.

Great choice, I had a minigrip in 440c and loved it (I've really missed it since I traded it off). I have been thinking of getting one with D2 and a Cabella's just opened up not far from here. Hmmmmm?

First off, welcome! Secondly, I did the same thing when I started with knives and got a Lansky (and yes, whether you realize or not, this is just the beginning  ). It works well for me reprofiling blades or other "major" sharpening jobs, but for touch ups on most of my knives I use a "V" sharpener with ceramic sharpening rods. A.G. Russell has one, or you might want to try a Sharpmaker which comes highly recommended at BF. I think CRKT has also just come out with a single rod system that might fit this niche.

I bought one of the full size d2 grips in plain and a week later bought another they are the best verision of the grip IMO although I have not tried a ritter.

Ohhh I am realizing its just the begining! I have ordered a kit from Texas knife dot com (Compact skinner) I have sharpened everything in the house! :D Thanks for all the input here. My father has a few customs and I just recently got the bug.
