I just scored a used Benchmade 710 for a great price. I've been wanting a older 710 for awhile now and jumped when I got the chance. It is in almost new condition, locks up solid and the blades perfectly centered. One small problem though its got some slight surface rust, How can i get rid of it without ruining the finish ?

The rust spots didn't really come through in the picture

I have used a number of rust removers over the years. For real slight rust often wd40 will take it out. Navy jelly works for stubborn rust but watch that you dont leave it on the blade for more than a few minutes. I also use a product called ExR rust remover that I bought from an auto parts supplier that works quite well.

I got some spotting on my ZDP-189 Delica 4. I used some Barkeeper's Friend and scrubbed the blade. It took care of it.

I have no idea if this is recommended or if you should be doing it. I know BKF has Oxalyic Acid, and I'm guessing that if you don't wipe it off properly, it will corrode your blade. I'm simply stating something I did; try it at your own risk.

Another method is to use a gray ink erasure for spot removal.

This can affect the finish a bit, though.

If it is a uncoated blade (wasn't sure from the pictures) you can use Flitz, or Mothers Mag Polish, or Simicrome. I use Flitz and Mothers often for polishing and cleaning my blades. They are fairly gentle and don't do much to change the blade finish other than make it a little smoother.

I’ve used an automotive corrosion remover from Mothers before. It worked and was fairly gentle.

I would be careful with naval jelly and other rust removers especially if it is D2. They work by an acid breaking down the rust and can also etch the metal some. I would try the eraser or flitz route. I also don't thing you would be happy with the finish if you sanded it and bluing only sticks to carbon steel. It won't stay on stainless and I think D2 is stainless enough for it not to stick.
