Here's my latest finished piece. I need critique. The blade 9.75" long and .25" thick of 5160 steel. The handle is cocobolo and the fittings are steel. Leather sheath.

It's really nice, I'm not sure what to think about the blade though, because of the angle. Could you post more pics?

Ray, I like it !! Is this the one we talked about ricasso length ? If you, you hit it spot-on, IMHO. It looks excellent in every respect. The blade, I love that shape, guard setup and now, THAT's a nice handle. Dang, nice sheath too. You nailed the package. Fantastic !   Jason.

Thanks Jason. This is the blade that I showed you on that other post when I just finished grinding it. Now it's finished. The ricasso might still be a little longer than most knives but I like it this way. I contoured the handle to fit the owner's hand (he has big hands) and flared the butt for more secure grip when chopping. It was lots of work!

Hi Ray,

I like it a lot. It's a neat blade shape and the contoured handle looks spot on. I notice that the guard apepars to be asymmetrical - slightly longer on the cutting edge side versus the spine side. On a big blade with a pronounced dropped edge such an asymmetrical guard works well to provide visual balance. I'm not sure it works as well here without the dropped edge, but that is purely a matter of my personal preference. Sheath looks real good too.

Spot on in all areas except the point IMO...just needs to be little pointier---is that a word:D
Very clean well executed blade and sheath

Looks great, the sheath is marvelous!

Why did you choose such a radical trailing point? Is it just a style issue, or for some practical reason? Same q. about the location of the lanyard hole?

Personally I'm not a big fan of upper handguards - this knife probably has a big enough handle to accomodate it. And the handle does look mighty nice. I like a narrower ricasso or a choil to aid in sharpening, but this is not my knife of course.

Overall it looks very well made, great looking finish!

A good chopper and seems to be an excellent camp knife (...hard to judge only on pics.... What a pitty I cannot handle this one !!!!....). From this side of the pond, we would call it : "un tres bon couteau à chocs..." (translated : "a fairly good camp knife").

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I appreciate all of it! I chose this blade shape because I think it works well. I've always liked the edge to curve down a little. The double guard is not necessary but I like the look of it and it is asymetrical. I made the edge in line with the ricasso because I find it more challenging to do this way- when grinding the plunge it has to be perfect. If it wasn't perfect I could have fixed it by putting a notch or narrowing the ricasso (make sense?) which I do sometimes to make it perfect.

Thanks Keith. For some reason when I upload pictures on this site, the quality goes way down. The pictures are okay in my computer it's just when I transfer them they look ugly and I can't figure out why.
