As a long time collector of almost everything, I find this recently authenticated photograph of William H. Bonney, also known as Henry Antrim and better known as Billy The Kid, that a guy paid only $2 bucks for and is now expected to fetch upward of five million dollars when it goes up for auction utterly fantastic!

This is the type of find us pickers and collectors dream of and the story that goes along with this photo is so interesting that a documentary has even been filmed about it.

I posted this in the hopes that any other history buffs like myself might find it interesting reading.
I hope to be able to buy a print as I wont be able to afford the original!:D

I watched the last half or so of that special and the specialist they went to did not believe it was of Billy the Kid. Has that changed? Have they now found someone that will give it a COA?.

Update: I just pulled up a website where it stated that the picture has been deemed authentic. Wow! what a goldmine this gentleman found. Lucky him.

I think I will pass on this auction unless something dramatically changes in my life.

Would be nice to have the cash to own items like these.
Talk about conversation pieces!!

My mother does genealogy on a professional basis, and occasionally things similar to this come up. There's always some old family photo in an old bible in a trunk in the attic, or some old newly discovered box of photos or something. Makes for some very interesting family heritage - but never the kind of financial windfall this fellow encountered.

2 bucks in a Fresno antique shop . History channel did a special on it last week . It was being negotiated for 5 million .

How much you want to bet Bill Koch buys it? He has the other photo of the kid and 5 million is pocket change for him. That was a real cool show, that dude dropped some bucks getting it authenticated.

There has gotta be more photos from that day floating around out there.
I don't think the photographer would have lugged out all that equipment, taken one picture and then said "thank you bye"
Makes ya wonder.

I also wonder if they let him win the croquet game ???:D

Has any more context been given to that photo? The thing that seems strange to me is how all the folks in the photo are spaced out, but seem to make some sort of line. I may be trying to read into it too much, but compared to other photos of the era, this doesn't seem to be a photo that is posed close up, and this doesn't appear to be a photo of any particular event where folks are grouped organically.

I believe they were playing croquet when the picture was taken. I watched the show and an expert could not positively identify Billy the Kid did say that the croquet set was appropriate for the time.
