Light was fading, but I wanted to snap a couple pix and post 'em before I get swamped for the week.
This it the new BK-17 that I brought home from the Northeast Gathering yesterday.
A buncha thoughts, semi-ordered:
1) These things feel great in the hand. Yes, they are slim, but nicely so, and it gives the user options. The handle contours are excellent. Scales are a few thou shy of the tang - probably spec'd for the pre-coating size. I think they're great. If you do a full strip the fit is probably even closer. Some folks have commented, so I'm saying I think they're well done. GREAT JOB continuing the legendary ergos of the BK&T line, Ethan. Although I am only an egg, I have contoured a good number of handles and my hat is off to you.
2) The sheath rocks. Yes, that's right. It's a HUGE step up from the simply functional larger sheaths. This thing is loaded with features and feels well constructed. Yes, it's outsourced, but the folks responsible for the specs and QA are doing their jobs. Again, well done!
3) Excellent manufacturing evident in the grind symmetry, finish, markings, and edge. Again: well done!
4) The entire edge was shaving sharp out of the box. 'nuff said.
5) Despite the fact that I'm not a clip-point fan, I do like this knife. It's only slightly concave. It's very stabby. I stabbed oak stumps several times just to get that out of my system
6) The coating. I like the coating, I can see wear in it. I might clean off the bevels and leave the rest. Hmmm... I like that I can choke up on the blade and then not worry about wiping off corrosive fingerprints.
7) The grind: this is essentially a saber grind with a swedge. I prefer the FFG on the 16, but you know what? I can do that on my own knives, so I'm actually quite pleased to have a knife configured in a way I wouldn't make myself. And it should take a beating. That's very cool, variety is good. Changes? I might straighten the clip. Pondering this now.
8) The kydex sheath I received with the knife made by AngryHippie is first-rate. I've squeezed a few of these myself, and he nailed it. Retention is perfect, there's no movement, the rivets are expertly applied, there's a drain hole, edges are well finished, contoured to match the knife etc. Sweetness.
Want a 'one knife'? A tweener will do the job.
