Received a replacement sheath from Marion Poff

http://marioncarry.blogspot.com/

Good price and good stuff, thought I'd share it. I haven't been using her much because I just couldn't get along with the factory sheath, am very happy with Marion's work. The only mods I've done to my BK11 - hogging out some metal under the finger guard, putting a bit of a clip on the point, and removing the blacking from the grip up. This is one useful tool - gonna see a lot of EDU, I'll have to see how it holds up to rust as its being carried IWB and I just don't seem to adjust to the heat well anymore.

Sorry about the pics, but if I waited till I had some real nice ones I'd never bother.

ETA: That sheath looks nice!

sweet. I think im gonna pull the trigger on a bk11, ive tried the rest now its time to try the best

Its a fantastic knife, but I couldn't get over the sheath dulling my blade - some folks don't seem to have the same issue but I wasn't alone. I initially thought the grip would be too cramped, but it a very useful configuration for a variety of grips/uses. Now I'm going to be wanting one of the San Mai versions while they're still around.

That's the version id like to get. How do the scales make it feel in hand btw? I hear they're comfortable but not worth the value of the whole knife comfortable. 30 for a knife then 30 + for the handles seems a bit outrageous unless they're f-ing pillowtops :D

I was having the same problem and word around is you just gotta repeatedly draw your blade to cut a grove in the plastic.
So I heated up the sheath just to make it warm and sharpened my San Mai 11(because it seems I'm able to get the metal sharper. Whether I'm just more meticulous with it because I like it more or someone else has the same effect let me know) and then immediately, albeit accidentally, cut the two pins that hold it in thus making the sheath useless. I blame the combination malleable sheath and lazer sharp knife, but I hear not going overkill is an effective fix.

I'd get the scales again if anything happened to mine. Between the scales and removing some metal under the guard I'm impressed with how well the grip fits.

Initially (after realizing what was going on) I sharpened mine up on 120 grit sandpaper and repeatedly drew the knife - dulled the knife, no improvement. Then I wrapped some lapping film around the blade and repeatedly drew the knife - still didn't fix it. Sharpened her up and cut into the sheath three times or so to see what would happen and it dulled the blade up but good - throwing light back along its length. Was able to strop it back into shape somewhat - on the sheath itself. Decided the sheath had inherent properties that made it unsuitable for me and luckily came across Marion's name when another member posted on this forum. I knew what I had to do...Its enough to prevent me from recommending the knife to others, or recommending with the advice that you chuck the factory sheath ASAP.

wow...clip point necker...
Great one you know ;)
And the sheath "swallows" the knife pretty deep. I hope it's better than the standard one, it makes my BK14 dull faster than I cut cardboard...
So I have to make a leather sheath myself
Hey why don't yoo put a swedge edge on it, I think it's gonna be really sexy

Man, I'd love to put a swedge on it, but I'm about 50% for making those look real nice from scratch, and it would weaken the tip a bit. I had to put a clip point on it though, I use my EDU for things like flipping dip-switches and moving jumpers around on circuit boards in addition to harder stuff - the factory point wasn't acute enough by just a little. The biggest improvement was definitely removing /rounding off the underside of the finger guard. A small amount of effort made a world of difference. The sheath is real nice, I wear it IWB and having it come a bit further up the handle is a big plus. Good retention etc and he can make 'em with whatever hardware attachments you want - I just use a stitch awl and put a nylon loop on one side. I really like this knife, am glad I don't have to wince every time I take it out of the sheath.

Cool mods, cool sheath. I want one of these pretty bad... waiting to hear if KA-BAR is doing grivory handles.
