New BK14 Battoning with New Scales! - Pic Heavy

This BK14 comes from Clich’s 4000 post giveaway (thanks again Clich!). I have been having some fun with it just doing normal things like cutting cardboard and opening stuff. I used it in the kitchen the other day and took some pics (Those will be in my next thread).

I talked to Kyptoglow (from the fleabay) about getting some scales before I had even received the 14. He was about to start making full size scales for it and I got in on them. I favored the orange with green glow scales to keep better track of it day and night. The texturing is kind of like sand paper and grips really well. I might be getting more calloused with use everyday :D. I could always just hit it with some sand paper for a minute. This thing feels great in hand and is super comfy to choke up on. They fill my hand really well, but it does make just throwing it in my pocket or belt a bit more bulky, worth it though!. I was going to notch out a lanyard hole at the end of the handle, but I think that I would lose some comfort. I really like how the front flats of the scales are for choking up.

Here are some pics (sorry for the quality of a few of them):

The only issue that I have had is that with some light battoning the scales slid over the handle. The scales are flat on the inside and are held in place by pressure from the nice hardened hex screws and a small threaded piece of pipe used as a spacer. I filled in the void in the handle with hi temp hot glue to keep it from sliding around again. I tried it out this morning with much luck. Problem solved!

Here they are a little dirty and glowing

Great knife and scales! Many thanks to Clich, Kryptoglow, and of course Mr. Becker.

Very cool. Glad it made it ok. Enjoy it. I always wonder about krypts stuff. hows the grippiness? alot of stuff i see of his look to smooth.

Looks good man, I like the idea of the hot glue in the center to prevent slipping. I might have to barrow that idea next time I make a set for my 14, Sounds a bunch easier than making the little wood spacer like I did.

How well is the hot glue idea holding up? (get it? lol)

Nice scales man, I was looking at those earlier actually!

thats an ingenius idear....but I would think superglue or gorillaglue might be a more long-term solution over hotglue.

I like the look, lol aint sure about the glowing part though...but u sure as heck cant lose it in the dark!

Clich - Its plenty grippy. I handled a Kershaw Blur once and it reminds me of that. It really locks into my hand. He said its the same texture he uses on 1911 scales I think. The texture was a concern of mine too. I think he did very well.

Sevens - Thanks man, I was thinking of trying to fit something around there you were saying. I lucked out when I saw my hot glue gun 8)

But wouldn't the hot glue absorb shock better?
Oh, and Thrill, mind if I post pics of my pampered 14 on your contest thread? I got something in the mail today and I'm feeling like I need to show off :D

I made liners out of scrap kydex I had lying around for when I was trying to figure out how to attach the scales I made out of cutting board. I find that it works really well so it may not be a bad idea to improvise something yourself

Thrillbilly - I thought about using epoxy or something, but I wanted it to come apart easy. Maybe if I sprayed oil on the knife so it would only stick to the scales and spacers? I dig the glow, they would still be great if they didn't tho. I'm thinking of it as a bonus I guess.

Deadfall - I hadn't even given it a second thought 8). I just took it apart and it looks the same . I would have to recommend them. I was on the fence about getting the new kabar ones, but I wanted texture.

I need to get some kydex first tho 8). I've been meaning to place an order for a while now. I just wish I could purchase locally so I wouldn't get raped on shipping.

Just cut out something that will fit in the skeletonized part of the handle, match the screw holes and viola! No more wandering scales!

i wonder if uv cure bondo would work well, and then you can sand it perfectly flat, and voila

I have thought of trying epoxy putty you could mash it into place then remove it to cure so it wont glue itself to your knife, it also sands easily. Not sure if it would crack though it can get kind of brittle. Bondo might work better seeing as how its more flexible. I like the idea.

ABC gum! that crap last forever on the bottom of schooldesks...why not in a 14's hollow? ;) Bubbalicious Becker!

hillbilly engineoohatee is what happens when u take generations of folks...and not give them any money LOL

haha nothing wrong with a little hillbilly engineoohatee in my book. Its the only way I can get stuff done half the time.
