Earlier on, I posted a thread asking which would be the best bet for my first BK. The opinions varied so drastically that I decided that I would look for the least expensive one that I could find. Yesterday, I opened my mailbox to a brand new BK7 delivered to my door for $60.00. So far so good. My question is about the availability of Micarta scales for this model and are they worth the price that I am seeing for the BK2? What are their advantages over the grivory grips?

Congrats on the new steel. $60 shipped was a hell of a deal. Never seen a 7 go for that much. Or for so little I guess I should say.

Geez, $60 for a 7...Where'd you find that? The Ka-Bar micarta is pretty sweet but I personally wouldn't pay the $40 for them. The only reason I have a few sets is because they've been in packaged deals with other Becker knives. Not saying they're bad but for that price I'd pick up an eskabar instead and have a really awesome combo.

I have no qualms about spending $40 for the becker micarta. it's GREAT stuff. I usually hit mine with some 400 or 600 grit sandpaper to smooth out a little bit of the leftover CNC milling marks. They provide great traction whether wet or dry, and they're virtually indestructible. For me, they are a necessity.

Throw some bike innertube on those grivories for a while and see what you think. They aren't bad at all.

Thanks for all the input guys! I'm eye ballin' the neighbor kids bike as we speak! Seriously, I may have to order some micarta's but will try the tube thing first. The grivory fills my hand perfectly but it is a tad slick. The 60.00 was a buy it now ebay thing. I just couldn't resist. What a blade!

I like the texture of micarta but mostly I prefer how it adds more weight to the hilt and improves the balance.

A cheaper way to improve the grip texture is what my brother did to his BK-7. He just roughed up the grivory with a coarse sanding sponge. ;)

I've found the older givory is textured every so slightly different than the newer stuff, so whenever I pick up an older Becker, it's grivory gets transferred to my users and the newer stuff on the less used/etc...
