Hi,

Just got a brand new BK9 from Amazon. The lettering on it is stamped on the side, not etched.

As I understand it, they should be etched.

Do I have that right?

Thanks!

The newer ones should be laser etched yes... but you probably got an older stamped model. No big deal... Some people actually prefer the stamp to the etch.

Pretty cool.

OT, but you might be a relation of mine... Don't meet very many Crowell's!

Any relation to the Crowell's in Arkansas and Texas?

Well I don't know, but it's certainly possible. I'd even say likely. Not many of us, eh? I know there are Crowell's in Nova Scotia, and on Cape Cod. Didn't know about you in Arkansas and Texas.

Yep its a fake! you poor guy.
I'd be happy to dispose of it properly for you.
:D

Nice blade, I wish mine was stamped. after stripping and polishing it some, the logos are almost gone.

All right, all right. I get it. Paranoid first-time buyer.

Thanks! Yes, I do plan to strip it. And I'm going to make a leather sheath for it this Fall.

The stamping is actually deeper in the blade than the etched ones. The lazer etched markings are still there after stripping but not deep at all. Another difference between the 2 kinds are the rough coating. The stamped Beckers had a much smoother coating.

Yes, this coating is pretty rough.

Okay. I'm convinced.

Thanks for all the responses!

Well how bout that... Never thought there'd be a bunch of damn Yankees in the tree!

I've only ever met one other Crowell in the wild.

Some great great uncle must have fled south!

Well, there are a dozen or so in my family if you count cousins, but my dad came from Iowa, so really all my crowell relations are from there. I met a historian in Nova Scotia named Peter Crowell, who was trying to solve the puzzle of where the name came from. (And there is a Crowell Lawn Mower Repair in Hyannis MA. Several streets with Crowell in the name.)
