"New" Black Matriarch 2 wear question

I bought a black Matriarch 2 off Amazon.ca. It arrived with a small piece broken off the tip, and what looked to me like coating wear on one side of the serrations. Excuse the out-of-focus coating pic, as it's a crop from the tip pic. I took a shot side by side with my older Matriarch on the right with a mostly intact tip:

To me, the way the coating is worn off at the tip of the serrations looks like someone has used the knife. The seller said, "The colour 'wear' on the back of the serrations is completely normal for this model and is to be expected. As for the photo of the tip, it is not very clear what we are looking at so it is tough to comment without inspecting the unit in person."

What are your thoughts? Is some coating wear on the serrations fresh out of the box normal for black Matriarchs (and why would this be model-specific?), or am I being fed a line? I'm sending it back anyway because of the tip, but I'm curious about the coatings.

Thanks,

Chris

Amazon is notorious for having fakes, especially Spydercos. Purchase from a reputable dealer.

I thought I was. It was from Blades Canada, which I took to be Warriors and Wonders. Not the most customer-service driven dealer, but not known for fakes, either.

You'll probably want to remove the above link to a non-supporting dealer.

As for your knife; who knows. Maybe it got missed by QC right from the factory or got damaged in transit to the dealer, to you, or both. Maybe someone else bought it prior to you and took it out of the box and did something with it, returned it as "new" and the dealer didn't check it upon return and just relisted it.

Personally, the partially serrated knives that I've purchased have always had the coating missing off the flat (non-sharpened) side of the blade. Never bothered me much as I use my knives and I just chalked it up to how the knives were sharpened from the factory with serrations.

As well, my experience regarding this issue with the dealer you mentioned has been that everything I've bought from them has arrived to me in a condition I'd call "brand new". Just my $0.02 on the subject.

Thanks, Chariotz. Link's gone. I'm not sure if that's them on Amazon or someone else trading on their name, as they don't list Amazon on their website.

Good to know about the coating wear. I figured it could be sharpening wear but wasn't sure. The broken tip was the deal-breaker as my knives aren't safe queens, so I was more curious about the wear than concerned.

Thanks,

Chris
