I was absolutely PISSED when Blackhawk discontinued the MOD Knives. Well, they've made up for it. They came out with the CQD Mark 1 Type E, and it was ROCK SOLID, and cheap enough that I didn't feel guilty about beating the hell out of it. Well, the CQD Mark 1 is HUGE, and a little too big for EDC...

Well, Blackhawk just released the CQD Mark 2 Type E. Starts at $79.99, which means street price should be cheaper! I'm guessing about $50. I'll DEFINITELY be picking one of these up, and retiring my MOD CQD Mark 2 to the safe.

Here's a link. They have no pics up yet, but I'm sure it'll be nice, since the Mark 1 Type E was.

I had a CQD Mark 1 Type E and just never warmed up to it. It was WAY to big for carry with that dumb cutter on the frame. Would have been smarter to use the blade as the cutter and just put a groove in. Anyway, it was super slow to open and ended up selling it off. I wasn't a big fan of the plunger lock design. Maybe the Mark 2 will be a better design.

Is this also an auto?

Its a Plunge Lock. Its a manual........for now...hopefully, for 2010, Blackhawk will make their CQD Type E-series into autos as well.

the blackhawk pointman is great, i like it better than the mark1. the mark1 is well built but i found it way too big also. the pointman is small and hefty, and the g10 is thick and rough to provide a good grip and the blade flies open very easily. may not look like much, but its my favorite blackhawk knife out of the 3 i own. i have the mark 1, pointman, and b-wharned.

I'm a big fan of the CQD Mk1 but I don't carry it in a pocket usually either. When I end up breaking down and getting the Type E its getting sent to 308sniper for a coating, that "BLACKHAWK!" across the blade is ugly as sin.

The CQD Mark 1E (Made in Tiawan $79.00) That I have handled has vertical blade rattle (IE plunger lock engagement not tight rock solid) I don't know about everyone else who say theirs have absolutely no play but mine does.

I have always wondered how much of a pounding that Zytel seatbelt cutter can take before breaking ("tactical" high adrenaline etc..) off since the stainless steel reinforcement inside the handle ends before reaching the seatbelt cutter section of the handle. I addition I find the seatbelt cutter does not cut very smoothly (it binds easily.)

I like the design (except for the weakly reinforced seat belt cutter that does not work well [it binds]) and ergonomics of this knife but I think MOD f#cked up on mine (quality control)

How is the does the expensive as hell discontinued US made aluminum version compare ?

Lock should hold strong but at $79.00 even though relatively much less expensive than the aluminum version, it is still in the price range where I don't want any kind of blade play.

I like seatbelt cutters but only if they work well (ie easier and safer to use than the blade.) With the one I handled I could understand why someone would say f#ck it saw off the seatbelt cutter and just use the blade.

Give me break if there are other Mark 1Es like mine out some people are just going to discover the seatbelt cutter limitations when the sh#t hits the fan.

Swapping out the nylon washers in the CQD Mark I E for larger diameter and slightly thinner (I think the fact that they are thinner is what solved the problem) Phosphor Bronze washers has for the most part solved the blade play problem.

Also the seatbelt cutter worked better after removing the blades and reassembling (don't ask me why ????)

I find the construction to be well thought out and strong. This knife has only one spring (the plunger spring,) the stainless liners seem to be hardened (they did not flex easily or bend.) It does use one tiny ball bearing (no spring for ball bearing used) to hold the blade closed. Don't let it roll away out of sight.

One annoying thing is the blade is magnetized, on mine anyway, and that kept pulling the ball bearing out it's hole during reassembly but I managed to get it done regardless. I now like it again.
