Greetings to all,
I have recently joined the BladeForums community and also purchased my first SOG knife. I have been handling knives from childhood and worked as a meat cutter for several years. I became interested in tactical designs when I worked in law enforcement and carried Cold Steel and CRKT tools. I now reside in one of the last best places, Montana.

I do a lot of hunting and fishing (when I can get the time) which includes frequenting areas known to have large puma populations. I have walked my labradors (I raise them) just below my home along the Yellowstone river and heard cats scream. I usually carry a side arm (M629 S&W) but that is not always feasable as more neighbors move in to my community. I purchased the Tigershark because of the length of the blade and the stout sheath. I have a PE II coming in a week. These may be secondary weapons but it feels really good with that chunk of razor sharp steel riding on my buttpack.

This is getting long and I wish to not bore anyone on my first post. Hope to be adding to the discussion in the future.
Best regards,
Denny

Welcome to BladeForums!! Great choice of knives!! The Tigershark is awesome.

welcome aboard.I was reading you other post on different blade steels, very interesting.I know what you mean about carrying a firearm is not always pratical. Here in California I like to hike and backpack in the national parks.I don't know about the other states but you can't carry a firearm in the parks. It's not un-common to run into a critter whether it a mountain lion or the 2 legged type.I had friend who had to defend his and his family life with a pan cake spatula in a remote camp ground when he was attacked by agroup of holligans just looking to beat somebody up.My answer is a hair shaving sharp SOG seal 2000 with a high rise type sheath so it don't hang way down my leg

over here in , australia , handguns are illegal and it is also ilegal to carry knives . thats why i have to carry mine in a discrete manner . i usually carry my flash 2 as it is quick to deploy and very discreet to carry . in order to carry a fixed balde , i need to wear a shirt that will completely cover the knifes sheath. i don`t carry fixed blades in public for self defensive purposes , only knives like my flash 2 . but then again i go bushwalking , which is where i really need a fixed blade , but if i were to get pulled over in my car carrying it on the way to/from my bushwalking i would get charged with carrying a controlled weapon , or going armed in public.

thanks for listening

regards

Patrick,
It is illegal to carry any type of firearm in national parks inthe USA (this would be Glacier and Yellowstone in Montana of which I frequent Yellowstone the most). You can transport but the weapon must be disassembled and the separate parts (bolt on a rifle and cylinder on a hand gun) locked in a case in separate parts of the vehicle along with any ammo loked separate from the firearm.

In Yellowstone, I have been within ten yards of a boar grizzly which the Park ranger watching him said weighed 800 pounds. Luckily, the bear was running away from my daughter and I (we were parked along the road in my Suburban but trust me, glass will not stop a charging grizzly). Times like that, I wish I was carrying a 375 H&H or a 12 guage with buckshot and slugs!

Your point about two legged varmints is a valid one. I usually carry at least two knives and somtimes three (if I am camping or hunting). I think redundant backup is wise if possible. But just remember that you better be willing and trained to use it if the bad guy decides to call your bluff (you must have the correct mindset).

I ordered a PE II last week and will carry it and the Tigershark with me when I hike along the Yellowstone river which runs about 400 meters below my back yard. The locals used to call this 3 mile stretch of the river ''Cat Alley''. Believe me, some of those big cats (puma or mountain lion) are back.

I appreciate your greetings and hope we can discuss edged weapons in the future.
Best regards,
Denny

G'day SIRGALANT,
Though our firearm laws here in the states are not quite as stringent as Down Under, I try not to cause trepidation (fear) amongst my neighbors. Not all look at the second amendment of the US Constitution as I do. I try not to push my views upon them and respect their right to their opinions.

However, my Dad taught me the old adage, ''You can have twelve men judge you or six men carry you'', so I carry at least an edged tool or two everywhere I go and do so discreetly as you wisely put.

Perhaps someday our politicians will finally come to see that knives (and firearms for that matter) are just tools. The weapon is the mind of man.

G'day to you and thanks for the greeting and comment.
Best regards,
Denny

i have been out of the knife market just lately , due to lack of funds , but soon i`ll get a full time job and start buying again. i have also just joined the Autralasian Knife Club , and they sell the materials ( barstock , handle blocks / scales , knife blanks , how to make your own knife books dvds etc.) to make your own knives , plus discount mail order knives. i would like to try making a few knives , so it should be good.

Denny,

Welcome to SOG Forum !!

The Tigershark makes for a fantastic "first SOG" ..... mine goes with me on every hunting trip.

Cheers,

Carl

if i didnt know better , newpighunter , i`d say you slept with that knife under your pillow , or only took it off your belt when you showered

I know a knifeseller in Brisbane, I purchased some from him. Last week I asked him if I can buy a Flash2 from him, he said no as Flash II has assisted opening so they are like a flick knife which is illegal in Australia.

the place where i got mine manages to get them without a problem . i also know of another place to go in perth that sells the leatherman assisted openers.

300 - Welcome to the party! You have good tastes in guns and knives, IMHO.

SIRGALANT

Heya Sir Galant,

IANAL but...

A bit of clarification.

It is most certainly not illegal to carry a knife in all parts of Australia.
It is illegal to carry an offensive weapon without alawful purpose I think in all parts of Australia. A lawful purpsoe might be a pistol club member on his way to a shoot or a licensed security gaurd with an ASP baton.
If you carry a knife and are questioned by the boys in blue and you say you carry it as a weapon, then you can and probably will be charged.

It used to be that if you gave a lawful reason, you could get away with most anything.
Eg why are you carrying a Cold Steel Tanto?
Why constable I use it to peel my fruit at lunch...

And that would be OK.

You could also say "it's for ulitliy purposes"
It's not so lenient now, eg a 9" blade bowie would probably end up with you in courst as a general purpsoe utility knife (though you may be able to get a not guilty if you ahve a good well researched argument) but you can still carry a knfie over here, as long as it is for a lawful purpose.
Personally I have carried bali songs (now illegal to even own) CRKT folders and others.

As long as you don't say they are for use as weapons and they are not prescribed types of knives (apparently some kives are more dangerous than others, eg a 1 " double edged dagger is FAR more dangerous than a 9" carving knife, according to our legislators *rolls eyes* ) you are OK.

Also remember there are some kinds of knives which are illegal to import, but not illegal to own or manufacture, since customs does it's own thing with regards to imports ( http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/FS_Importing_exporting_knives1.pdf for a quick run down on custom's positon on importation of knives) and the states do therir own thing with regard to possesion. See www.austlii.edu.au for most state and federal laws.

I live in SA. I'm not sure what the laws are in WA (I assume you're in WA), but over here you can actually carry a knife if you have a lawful reason.

With regard handguns, they are not illegal in most states but are heavily controlled and reequire license and registration. Again the feds have stuck their oar in and compelled the states to make the laaws "uniform" and caused many types of pistols to be made illegal, as well as de facto imposing other rules via customs controls - ie the prohibited imports lists/schedules.
