Hey all i posted the following in the schrade forum(my questions are below):
was given a knife that was my gramps, the main blade is broken and the second blade sharpened to almost a spike, at somepoint somebody tried to re-pin it, the tang stamp says Schrade Cutlery Walden NY 3 lines, 3 1/8" closed, the scales i think are the butter and molasses, maybe celluloid?? Im not all that familiar with Schrade, any body got any ideas on what pattern this is both blades open at the same end, attached is a scan. Any info would be appreciated, its a shame the scales are nice looking and in pretty good shape:(

Assuming i could even find the exact same knife, could it be done, i realize i may be talking heresy here but im curious is this better left to somebody with experience? Anybody ever done it? Any franken-knife experts?
And i might add that this wouldnt be sold, etc.
thanks
ivan

The most feasible route would be to find the same pattern Schrade knife with a good blade-and use it as a donor knife.

exactly, but is that something i should try myself or leave to someone with some talent? I really cant screw up the knife much worse than it is:D
is it realistic to do with simple hand tools?
thanks

Here is a site that may help you with the work- http://forums.delphiforums.com/Knife101/start
You can do it yourself. All you need is the proper blade, a flat file, pin punch, a small hammer, and some wet/dry sandpaper.
You will need to fabricate a spacer to force the blade against the backspring, and you may need to fit the blade to the backspring. This will take some trial assembly/disassembly. Pin material (nickel silver) is available from any of the knifemaker's supply houses. If the exact size is not available, then a larger size can be turned down with a file and electric drill. The pin should fit the tang hole perfectly.
I can help here, or on Knife 101 with specific problems.

I would find a simalar pattern knife for using and keep the original like it is. That is the way it ended up after gramps used it and to me it is more valuable to see how gramps pretty much used her up.

Find a similar knife and use it up like gramps did.
