New blade stamp designation?

So I was breaking down my Sm. Classic Sebenza tonight to clean and re-lube it. I was taking the washers away from the blade and where there is usually stamped the "S" for S30V, there was a "C" stamped there??
Its a relatively new one, I think O7 production date.
Whats the "C" stand for? Anyone know?

I used to think the S was for S30V, but after taking apart all of mine, and doing some research, I found some people that indicated the S was for 'standard' and the C for 'classic'.

I'll see if I can dig up some threads.

Dont know about that? I've think I've had a few Reg. Sebenzas that where stamped w/ an "S" for S30V, but I'd be interested to see those threads.

Hmm...maybe it is for classic and standard?

Of course I can't find any of those threads now...

It was a few months back when I got a few new (to me) sebenzas that were supposed to be BG42. One is marked with 99 on the handle, but the other was marked 05. I can't find anything to say that the 05 one does not still have a BG42 blade, and just got new handles for some reason, but none of mine have the S (or C) on the blade.

I've got a 99 large reg, 01 small reg, and 05 small micarta, and I think they are all BG42 blades. I know the regulars are, just not sure about the micarta, since the handles are marked 05.

No S stamps would support the S being for S30V, but I just do not know.

Hmmm..interesting.
I've always read from the forums here that blades that were not stamped are BG42, blades with the S stamped under the washer..S30V. I'm not sure the handles really ever have much to do with the blade steel. I once got a NIB Sm. Reg. from a retailer w/ handles stamped with and older date, had the little ridges on the edges as well, but the blade was S30V and production date was of a current year. I think CRK must have a lot of handles on stock, ranging from all different production dates..when they build a Sebenza, they just grab which ever handle set they can..so you may get one w/ a really old date, or one w/ the current year?? Of course, I could be totally wrong...this is just an assumption from the Sebenzas I've owned. Now, If you have a BG42Sm. Micarta, that would be something..you should check the blade for a stamp..likely an "S" under the washer.

Thanks again

Well, I agree that handles may not match blade steels, but that doesn't explain how a BG42 blade could be in a knife with handles from 05. If it was S30V blade and 99 handles, I could understand that. The only explanation I have come up with is someone swapped the blade at some point, it had new handles put on at some point, or the blade is not indeed BG42. It works great so i'm not overly worried about it.

I just had the blade out earlier today, no stamp of any kind under the washers.

I really wish I could find the explanation of the blade stamps, I know I read it somewhere.

Good point...and yeah, that pretty much sums it up perfectly:thumbup:

I`ve talked to Heather recently, and she told me that nowadays "S" stands for Standard, and "C" for Classic blades. This is a recent change however. Not too long ago all S30V blades sported an "S". I don`t know when they changed to this new system though, and Heather didn`t know about that either.

I guess the question I need answered, is have they ever made any blades in S30V, with NO stamp at all. Maybe in 05? :) If not, I definately have a BG42 small micarta.
