This CHRISTmas was very good to me! I received 2x BK5, a BK4, and a BK17.

Being new to bushcraft and blades as far as the purpose if specific grinds and blade geometry goes, I guess my question to the vets should be:

"What types of tests do you perform on a new to you blade/ design?" Is there a specific torture test you perform? How would a new guy like myself figure out what the blades are good at etc?

Thanks

My favorite test is makeing a simple tent stake. It helps test chopping ability, and fine carving skills

Spring trap trigger, or the whole trap. Bow drill kits. Hand drill kits. But there are other techniques to practice such as burning out and carving. And on and on. Don't forget draw knife technique.

cut food, cut rope, clear a camp, whittle camp tools, and ...

just no batoning ;)

A tent stake will demonstrate harvesting, whittling and push cutting ability......

Harvest the stake, crown the top, whittle the point and gently crown it and then carve a cordage notch....

After you use a bunch of different knives to do this, two or three minutes will tell you a lot about a blades' utility.....

Have a grand good time with your new loot......

When I see people talking about making traps, I realize how bad I need to get to a Beckerfest! I have a whole lot to learn, and I am very ignorant of traps etc.
Tent stakes are more my speed ;-)

Beachmaster.......

Most traps are a collection of tent stakes or variations on a theme......

Thanks for the input everyone. I certainly appreciate it. Being new at something ain't very fun. But. Gotta start somewhere!

Ethan! Thanks for taking the time out of your schedule to drop in! Also, thanks for providing functional, DURABLE blades that for the price are untouchable!

P.S. any chance the BK1 BRUTE will be coming to a store near me anytime soon? I love the look of that blade!

Thanks again! Stay safe everyone!

Hey Tim.....

The Brute just does not perform for me as well as a Machax........ It DOES LOOK good...... The Nine also works better IMHO sooo....... Not likely......

Tim....first off, congrats on the new blades. As others have stated a tent stake will give you a really good idea as to which blade is good at which task. I do have a request.....post a pic of those Beckers after you have beat the hell out of 'em!!!

If you guys want a good trap, this is the one I use. The only diference is a use a fork or branched out piece for the toggle

Yeah. Looks of it were really the only reason I wanted one. ;^)

Either the 9 or 10 is next on the list. Leaning more toward the 10 simply because the 4 will do much of what the 9 will. But. Who knows?

I certainly will! I can't guarantee much work for either "5"... one for Papa (Me) and one for the "Familymaker" my firstborn (born 12-26-2014) when he reaches the level of maturity and safety required to own one.

BUT... The four and the 17 will surely get used as the rest of my collection has. Pictures of how spoiled I've become will be fun to take and post. Challenge... ACCEPTED!

P.S. Torture tests shall be avoided. I'll stick with basic use stuff. Maybe post the tent stakes with the particular blade who made it.
