I just ordered a 720 on Wednesday. I haven't gotten it yet but would like some input from some of you who own one. How do you like it? Is it what you thought it would be? Comparied to some other knives you have does it measure up with them? thanks again.

You did good and you will like it.One of my favorite production knives.Made for using.My.02

have a"knife"day

I like the 720 a lot as a practical pocketknife that you would actually carry around and use everyday. Also it is a pretty good outdoors survival knife to happen to have in your pocket, although not specially made for that purpose.

I've found that on the rare occasions when I flick it open, the Axis lock then needs to be disengaged with pressure from both sides for closing, whereas thumb pressure is sufficient if you use the thumbstud for opening all the way. Not sure if this is a virtue meant to be, or an Axis design flaw, or a flaw in my individual specimen, but it isn't a big deal and I hardly ever flick it. I'd like to know if anyone else has had the same problem with an Axis lock. Let me know when yours arrives. Enjoy!

Kmclye, I too seem unable to easily close my 720 with one hand (as it comes from the factory). I suspect it's chiefly due to choice since I am worried--unnecessarily--about the cross pin (or bar?) bending after repeated one-handed closings using only one finger to disengage the locking bar.

I guess I could tweak the pivot tension, pull back on the lock with my thumb and index finger and flip the blade to open or close since I can do that with my Ares. However, I don't mind doing things nice and easy with the 720 which btw is a nice everyday carry. I carry it on days when I don't feel like using my Spyderco J.D. Smith.

Mine has a black blade with partial serrations (the only one the dealer had when the 720 first came out). I would prefer one with a plain edged blade in satin finish.

My 720 also locks up tight when "flicking" it open, so I try to refrain from doing that.
From what I understand, that is normal. I also always use both sides of the Axis lock to close the blade. I've found it easier to do than using just one side.

I've had my 720 since August, and absolutely love it! It's small enough to carry easily, but big enough for most tasks. I used to carry a 970, and this is much easier to carry.
I got mine in comboedge, with the BT2 coating, and have some scratches at the tip in the coating. Other than that, it's doing great.

Well I still don't have my 720 but I do have a 710 and when I flick it open it is a little harder to pull the lock back but it isn't to hard. I hope my 720 is here tomorrow.

I have a 720 and I have not had that problem, but, then, I flick it but not a whole lot. I haven't had that problem with my 940 either and I flick that one a good bit more. How do you guys flick it? I pull back the lock buttons and flick the blade out. Of course, if an LEO were to see me, it could be trouble, so I am a bit chary of doing it in public, as I am of doing it with my REKATS. Picture a cop seeing me flick my Sifu like that! A sure and certain ticket to the jail, I think.

Good question. I haven't been depressing the lock to flick it, just use the thumbstud till about threequarters of the way and then flick back lightly.

There isn't a temptation to do it, LEO or not. The only time I'd really need to flick it, the chances are I won't be in a position to be thinking about LEOs and pulling on lock buttons. I'm thinking about more prosaic things like being hauled overboard by a loose sheet entangled round my leg in a high wind, when my thumb slips on the stud.

Maybe I should just ask Benchmade directly.

I think you have a good point FullerH, the 940 falls out of its handle to easily for my liking. It could easily be termed a gravity knife. I think Benchmade could make a smooth axis lock that does not fall out so easily when the lock is depressed.

I received my new 720 today. I think that it is going to turn out to be a very good knife. I really like it. It was razor sharp out of the box. A lot of people say that they have gotten a BM with blade play, I have owned about 6 BM's and not one of them ever had any blade play. I think that BM is the best factory knife maker.

Glad you got your knife, John! You, tique, and I should get together next spring. There's a couple of other guys on BF from around here, and I'm trying to remember who they are.
I got my 02/00 KOTM 720S w/G-10 last week, and though I like the knife very much, the handles seem to cramp my fingers. I don't think I realized (even though I've handled them casually several times) just how short the handle is. Somehow the 720 always gives me the impression of a larger knife. Going to keep this one NIB, and maybe trade it. Could have done without the serrations, but I really like the blade.

FullerH, Anthony, have you loc-tited your pivot screws (talking 940s, now)? I haven't tried it yet, but will soon. If I get my blade loose enough to flick easily, there's blade play. It starts out fine, but within a few flicks the pivot screw seems to back out a little and then stop. Love to flick, but can't stand blade play
