After carrying my Victorinox climber for 10 years one blade in particular was worn down, and the scissors were just not cutting as they used to. I love the look of a well used knife, so I bought a new climber and popped the scales off, and replaced them with the scales from my 10 year old knife. Now I have the beautiful look of my old friend along with a brand new body. Am I the first to think of this?

Although I haven't replaced any of my victorinox scales I have talked to several people who have. Nothing quite like carrying an old new friend. Enjoy the new tools and familiar face.

Just the opposite, much to my regret. Mostly for the sake of adding pen stowage, I swapped out the well used original red scales on my Super Tinker for the Ruby Plus version. To my dismay, the results were so dazzling I can't bear to use the Vic on tough or dirty chores! Before, cosmetics were never an issue when it came to a job that might mung up the finish on any of my multi-tools or knives. If anything, I like the look of a use worn tool. But now, whenever I am carrying the ST and such comes up, I find myself looking for any alternative in reach instead of putting a booboo on my shiny thing. So I guess I found my inner consumerist, after all.
From this I learn there is such a thing as too pretty.

No.
I've had a Vic Deluxe Tinker for awhile. When I bought it online from a well known Swiss knife shop, I had my name engraved on it. I've recently upgraded to a Vic Craftsman. I took the old, engraved scales off the DT and cleaned & oiled that knife. Then I swapped the shiny new scales on the Craftsman with the old DT scales.

Now my Craftsman has my name on it (at no additional cost to me) and the Deluxe Tinker is in Like New condition and ready to be a gift to my nephew or someone else.
