I'm putting together a belt for when I go out in the bush it's got a pretty comprehensive FAK and now I'm working on a PSK. WHen I'm putting together a PSK I always try to think Fire, Shelter, water, Food. when I got to the water part I put the makings of a solar still, but I'd also like a way to boil water that doesn't take up too much room, I just tried out some of those heavy foil cupcake liners I tripled em up filled em w. water and put'em on the stove, the burner of the stove, boiled up nice and quick, only about a shotglass worth but that's how I'm used to consuming most liquids anyway maybe if I could find some heavy foil that might work too.

I was thinking about heavy foil thats folded flat with 45 degree creases like wrapping a present, do you catch my drift? I have to try it out with some paper and get the folds right, but it could be a good little pot for a small PSK.

I actually just tried regular tin foil I just doubled it up shaped in to a bowl about 3 inches deep it held more water than my mess kit pot and boiled up without a problem and folds down flat I used about a 3 foot piece, The only problem is removing the water from the flame as the sides are not strong enough to hold the water when the unit is moved, perhaps if it was cooked on a flat rock and than the rock moved it can than be drank at you leisure...either way I just put about 6 feet of foil in my psk

I don't think I would ever bother to boil water if I could only boil an ounce or 2. Find a small metal cup that will at least boil 8oz and pack some gear into it. The plastic cups that come in some mess kits hold 6oz. That is too small to satisfy an 11 year old Boy Scout.

i've tried it with the heavy duty foil and it worked well

heavy duty foils works, but can be a pain to deal with.... i have a titanium snow peak, solo cookset that i keep in my B.O.B./hiking pack...

i also use a titanium cup a lot too..... that might work for you... i've seen them in a few different sizes......

the foil I tried in the 2nd posting was able to hold more water than the metal pot in my mess kit...thats enoough to satisfy several 11 yearold boyscouts...and it folds down to an insig. size. the most likely kit to be with you if the shtf is the one you don't mind having on you all the time, and that doesn't take up too much space. If camping I'd certainly bring a better apparatus but for a kit that can be worn in an surplus mag container on your belt I'll take it.

Mike thanks I will look for a small titanium cup I have a stainless cup but it's much too large for the kit.

I forgot a standby of mine-- SnowPeak makes a titanium bowl that sells for $12 and will boil water as well as any $50 pot. Add a wire bail and some tin foil for a lid. Light as a feather and tough as nails. Makes a dandy bowl too :)

Put it in the bottom of a stuff sack and toss your PSK in there. Go outside and follow the little animals around :)

For a lite weight bowl try a grease container from wal-mart.
Or my favorite, a empty dinty more 24oz. stew can.

confused? how is heavy duty foil a pain to deal with? especially in comparison to regular foil? the poster seemed to indicate he wanted something compact, not a container. there are a bunch of containers to use, but i think it's a good thought about a water container that can be used for boiling that isn't a cup or other item with structure so it can really be carried everywhere and basically all of the time.

That's the idea.... When I'm hiking I try to carry the right equip for cooking and whatnot but for a belt worn psk I need something really packable...Thanks for all the great ideas please keep em comin

When all else fails and I'm totally out of room, any of my metal cups can be mini-carabinered on the outside of my pack by the handle.

Hehehe-- if your hat will hold water, you could drop hot rocks in it to boil water. It may fit kinda tight after it dries :) Another trick is to dig a hole, line it with your garbage bag, drop a few rocks in the bottom, add water and then hot rocks. Those first few rocks keep the red hot ones off the plastic. Add a lobster or two and melt some butter.....

You know, nothing would please me more if I spained an ankle or something and have the SAR team arrive to find me warm and dry and picking my teeth with a hand-hewn toothpick to litter me down the trail :D

"Hi, guys, what took you so long? Cuppa coffee before we go? Don't pull on that-- OW!"

I've been trying the same thing you are in reference to finding a low cost and relatively small package to carry.

I find the I have many 32 oz wide mouth Nalgene bottles around. So, I decided to get a Snow Peak Trek 700 mug. It just so happens to fit the Nalgene bottle. The Nalgene is waterproof to carry items. But, obviously can not be used to boil.

Sorry in advance if this is not what you were intending on carrying (being a bigger package than you anticipated).

I have just recently bought a stainless mug for the very same purpose, are you sure you cannot even attach yours to the outside of your pack with a bina?

I have a collection of "tins" and a couple of aluminum boxes -- they hold from about 1 cup (apx. .3 liter) to 3 cups (.9 liter). I have used them to make up various PSK's with the idea that these containers could be used to collect/boil water.

Get a titanium cup and pack stuff into it.

I have a GSI cup on the outside of my Nalgene. It works well and it saves a lot of space. I tie the cup to the bottle with 550 cord which makes for a nice loop for an old web belt to sling across my body if I'm just goin on a little hike.

Ditto on the can! I use an old MJB coffee can...use it to get water, purify it, cook in it, use as a bird trap, and carry odds and ends with. VERY affordable, and it adds a bit of "rustic chic" for those fashionable days in the mud and bugs.

Stainless Water Bottles "Klean Kanteen" From reuseablebags.com are a good choice, they come in different sizes. you will probably want to keep a water bottle on you anyway or you could pack the kit in it.

Skunkwerx had a post on this topic that went on for like five pages if you look up his posts you will find some cool suggestions.
