I was looking through the latest Tactical Knives and they have an article about the newBoker Applegate-Fairbairn combat knife. I've always liked these knives, and have one of the old style ones that I bought for about $100 a few years back. This new one cost $429, and is made out of 440C! I'm trying to figure out what justifies the cost increase? The new micarta looks nice, but spending over $400 on a knife made out of 440C just seems a bit much.
I know it's a dagger, so you don't need S30V's edge holding ability, but can someone help me with what they're doing to make this knife so expensive?

I have to agree, I see nothing in the photo or description of this knife to justify a $250 premium over and above the cost of the basic version of the knife.

A quick google search has brought up prices in the 120US range.
You are probably looking at the street price on the basic A-F knife ($179 MSRP). The so-called Boker A-F 5 seems to be some sort of limited edition premium version of the blade and according to the Boker website the MSRP is indeed a ridiculous $429.

I can only assume that they are trying for the rich-but-stupid collectors market. :jerkit:

My bad.

Well then, I agree that its probably a limited edition thing. And Im always suprised but they alwys seem to sell well, even if its just got a number on it or a special colour and the price is much greater (obviously I cant fault anyone for taking a special edition at the same price or if its got something worth paying for like a special steel/handle material).

I do have to admit that the new Harsey A-F with micarta handles are a beauty but a MSRP of $429USD for 440C is why I do not purchase more Boker knives but if it were S30v or CPM154 that would be another story.

Eh, I'd pay a premium for S30V or CPM154, but I don't think even with better steel it would be worth over $400 (at least to me).

If I was spending over $400 for a knife, I would probably go with a custom maker, rather than a production knife no mater how tarted up it was. :p

seems that the scales were pretty much a manual operation and this imo may have added to the cost.
its a fine dagger alright, but for it's MSRP.
