Hi Folks,
My new Hyper arrived this morning. I ordered a Trance for the Lady and Hyper for myself.
The Hyper will go into rotation with my now 3-year(?) M16-EDC. Although the new knife is exciting, comparing the two made me feel a little disloyal and made me realize how much I like the M16. I ordered the Hyper so I could possibly stash one at my most common travel destination for those times when I feel the need to travel tool-less.
The Hyper is just what I expected, aside from the China stamp (the Trance and M16 are both marked Taiwan - technically now part of China anyway). I like the feel, the action, the clip, the color, the edge, the flatness, etc. It appears to be a good, solid pocketknife with just enough modern flash to prevent me from wanting something too tacticool, and basic enough that it's not goofy. I like a pocketknife in this price range that is decent quality, but replaceable so I won't be heartbroken if some tragedy befalls it. (I won't tell you how I learned that lesson...)
The Hyper sits deep IWB so it's very discrete. It's harder to draw than the M16 for that reason, and also because the clip is so much stronger. That cuts both ways, so to speak. I once lost the M16 in a toilet bowl when the bottom of the handle caught on my shirt... Also I think the detent in the Hyper is more positive than the M16, which should prevent the frightening open-in-the-pants condition that I've experienced twice with the M16.
I live in a 3" (tip to grip) state, hence the re-profiled blade on the M16 - it was 3" of edge, but over the limit by the legal measure. I MUCH prefer the profile you see here to the original spear point. The Hyper fits the same model nicely. Either knife has to play the role of a backup field dressing knife should I drop my black Becker Necker in the dark in the unlikely event that I actually get another opportunity to use it.. :-/
I'm looking forward to using this new knife. The Trance is also really sweet - I miss the flipper/choil arrangement, but this knife looks less mean to me, and I often use it in the land of Sheeple.
At sea I used to carry a Gerber EZ-out, but that's too big for my current job/location (and that one walked too):
The Hyper is a tad thinner:
2-7/8ths skinny vs. 2-3/4 fat:
The Hyper is shorter, but flatter - carries IWB so smoothly I can't feel it. The clip sits really low, which is nice and discrete.
