Hi,

I just got ahold of the book: "Balisong: The Lethal Art of Filipino Knife Fighting" and am planning on reading most of it this long weekend. Any thoughts on this book? It's authors are: Sid Campbell, Gary Cagaanan, and Sonny Umpad.

Also, I just received my new MT L-UDT, Black, serrated from LRRP at SOFKnives@aol.com. VERY nice!!!!!!! It will be carried often on the weekends.

Ciao for now,

Tell us how you like the book, I believe that a review can be found on Chuck Gollnick's site.

Microtech makes awesome knifes. I have had a UDT, LUDT and just got a LCC/DA. There all simply amazing knives, and I cannot wait until their balisong comes out, it will be great as well.

I have a DA LCC, new UDT, MA Mini Socom Purple, MA SOCOM Elite, and now the L-UDT that I described. I guess you could call me a Micorholic! I have five of their knives, and they are all great.

I, too, am awaiting their bali. I will be one of the first on the list, to be sure.

Also, I just realized, do you know how much just those 5 knifes are worth above? I can't believe I have spent that much in the last little while.

It's an outstanding book by great authors. I've been meaning to get it up on my site.

Anyway, it's more about Filipino-style knife fighting than about balisong manipulation.

As an interesting sidebar...

I was reading some article in Tactical Knives by Mike Janich where he mentioned "Corto Cadena" being some amazing material from Guro Sonny Umpad...and that this was something to look for in the future for release, material-wise from Kelly Worden I believe. It was Worden or Keating...

I have spoken with Kelly and Jim about this material and they both say it is nothing short of amazing. Guro Sonny Umpad apparently has a very interesting "Sub-System" of Close Quarters Knifefighting...

It will be interesting to see what happens in the future with it.

And the same goes for a knife...

Some of my Knives and other neat things

I liked Sonny's book and he was one of the few knife guys wearing a bracer in his books. Met some of his students once, I remember they did punyo sumbrada light but close.

"Corto" means close. Mr. Umpad's specialty is close.

Yes, indeed it is. What grabbed me in the article was Mr. Janich's description of the Sub-System, I think it is more than just doing Sumbrada at closer range.

Specifically, "Cadena de Mano" is "Chain of Hands," and Inayan Escrima is very fast...

SO, Corto Cadena then becomes, "Close Chaining." As far as my translation skills are concerned.

There was precious little mention of it in the article, that's why I spoke with Kelly and Jim about it, and they were both quite impressed with it and both know the material and do the material and I think if it is ever released, it might be something very special indeed.

The close quarter stuff you guys are talking about, do you know what I should look up to get more info. Not necessarily knife fighting (God, I hope I am never in a knife fight!) But, the h2h stuff.

TIA

Having been on the receiving end of a knife three times, I hope you don't ever and myself ever again.

As far as Close Quarters H2H is concerned, I've been around the barn a few times, so to speak, and I think Jim Grover's Combatives Series from Paladin Press is about the best info there is on the subject.

I think you can add to that later, with more Advanced and Task-Specific material as well. But it is very good material.

As for learning how to use a knife in Self-defense, about the best Primer out there is Kelly Worden's Knife Fighting for Personal Protection Vol. 1 & 2.

Both of these Series of tapes will get you going only if you apply them with a partner, but they will go a long way to keeping you alive if you do apply them.

Even if you do not carry a knife for Defensive Purposes, the Worden Material is money well-spent because you begin to see what you have to do to defend yourself, same with Grover's Material...

Where can I find the Worden material? I am not a martial artist, or even a big guy. But, I sometimes have to stay late at work in the city of Pittsburgh, and, after 7:00, look out! There are bums, and druggies, and whatever around the streets. I caruy a knife for two purposes.

One, to open my mail, clean my fingernails, cut rope, string, thread, etc.. the usual cutting tasks.

But, I am afraid at night when I have to walk back to my car. Sometimes I work long hours. Just this last Friday (yesterday), I am simply walking through the Chatham Hotel ($$$) valet lot, and a guy tries to hit me up for loose change. I just can't understand these guys. Get a f*****g life! I bust my a** every day to go to work, etc....... You never know that one of these days, when I say, NO to the unsub, what he may be thinking or what he may do.

Down off the soapbox now...........

In any event, I just don't want to get killed because I had to work late.

You guys are great.

Ciao for now...
