Hey gents, I'm going to England in March for a metal detecting trip. While I'm there, I'll be out in the mud metal detecting and I'm looking for a decent boot that will do well in dense mud, waterproof, breathable would be nice, and something that will be comfortable for 12-14 hour days.

I have a couple pairs of Ecco boots, and a pair of Danner Acadias, but I don't want to wear the Acadias in the mud. The Eccos maybe...but they're not waterproof.

Any thoughts?

If you're going to be in the mud for long periods, I would recommend you wear what farmers over there wear in the fields all day - swamp boots. My wife's family (farmers in N. Ireland) refer to them as "Wellies". I walked through their fields for less than an hour one time and my boots/ankles were covered in thick, caked mud. Now I have my own pair of "Wellies" in the closet for when I visit.

Try overboots... they're not breathable, but nothing is breathing in 8 inches of mud anyway.

a nice pair of sorels would be good.Basically a rubber waterproof insulated muckaluk type hunting boot.

I'll second the Muck Boot suggestion. Slip on and off (mid calf height), just hose off the dirt & gunk, warm (but not too warm in warmer weather) and oh so comfy! ;)

You need Hunter Wellingtons:

They are a tradition in the UK. The upper classes are even known as the "Green Wellie Brigade" when they venture into the countryside!

You can buy much cheaper wellies, which are perfectly OK., but Hunters are the most comfortable.

Don't forget to buy them a bit large so as to get really thick socks in, the rubber doesn't keep out the cold too well.

You can buy wellies absolutely everywhere, but you might have to search a bit for Hunters.

Andrew.

Edited to add: Here's a wellie site.http://www.robinsonandhunt.co.uk/wellingtons.html

Thanks guys for the info.

Are the Wellies something that I could walk the fields in all day long (12-14 hours) and then do it again the next day for a week? I'm concerned about foot fatigue.

AWUK, I'll be in Colchester...whereever that is ;)
