Hi Guys,

I wanted to make something a little different from my usual knives. I have worked so long on this knife I've lost perspective, so I would appreciate feedback. The blade is 1095, about 8.5". The handle is coco bolo, and all the furniture is NS.I still have to make the finial nut and a collar, but otherwisw it's about done. I've never made a knive is this style, what do you guys think?

Dave

This is a very very beautiful knife, both aggressive and delicate looking. I loved it very much.....

For this being your first bowie, I'd have to say you did a fine job. Of course, I'm very partial to Bowie's . A man can never own to many different Bowie's ..................................

Thank you, Galaduin. I appreciate your kind words. And thanks to you as well, Ken. But, this is far from my first bowie, just the first one I've done in this style.

Again, thanks, Guys.

I think it's absolutely beautiful. I'd be very curious to have it in hand, as I wonder how comfortable the transition from the guard throat out to the handle would be, but that's subjective to hand size and shape, so what might not be the best for one person could be absolute perfection for another.

I think it would be at home in the "art knife" category, and yet looks fully usable where the art didn't get in the way of the functionality, which is something many of the art knives can't claim.

I keep coming back to look at it---nice job!

t1mpani,

Thanks for your compliments. I have average size hands, and the knife handles like a dream. The nice thing about this particular handle style is you can freely move your hand forward and back very easily. The shape feels your palm and provides a firm grip as well. I suppose you could choke up close to the guard if you needed to, but that isn't the best way to use this particular knife. Oh, and the balance is exactly on the plunge line. I failed to mention the s-guard is a filed clam shell guard, and the blade does have some nice vine pattern filework as well. Also, the handle has inlaid metalwork, i.e., ns name plate on one side and three various sized medallions on the other.

regards,
Dave

David,
That looks great. Nice balance of function with just enough bling. Without being gaudy. Excellent job.

Thanks, A. Sharpe, this knife does have a lot of N.S., and I did wonder if I overdid it, so nice to hear your comment that it has just enough bling.

and Keith, always nice to hear from you, thanks for the nice words.

Regards,
Dave

DAVE --- I can't remember where Delaplane is located. I recognize the name as I once lived in Lynchb'g, Va. I'm in the easter part of N.C. about two hours south of Norfolk. If you are ever in my area, please give me a call & stop in for a visit ---- I'm always in the shop, seven/10-12 hours a day................. Would like to see pictures of your other Bowies.

The style/finish/wood etc is just all around AWESOME:thumbup:

Well done brother, The more I dive into these knife maker galleries and WIP threads the more I am excited about taking the plunge myself.

Thanks for sharing, very nice work!

Hi Guys,

Ken, Deleplane, Va. is about an hour west of D.C., off of Rt. 66. If you are ever up this way send me an email and we can link up. And, most certainly, if I come down your way I'll give you a ring, perhaps we could pound some metal. I put your number in my contacts list for safe keeping. As for seeing my work, all you have to do is click on my name at the top of this post, and you will be taken to my picture gallery hosted by bladeforuns.

45 warrior, thank you very much for your compliments. This is a knife I put a lot of time into (way too much actually), but I just decided to really take my time and get it as absolutely perfect as I possibly could. As for making the plunge, why not? The one thing about knifemaking is it can be an extremely challenging hobby, or a very relaxing one. It just depends on which way you want to go. In either case, it's just plain ole fun!

Thanks again, Guys

Dave

Being a bowie builder myself I have to say very elegant. Love the shell filing on the quillions.

But how quick will it go through a 2x4 ;)

It has a strong 19th century Continental French feel to it for me. Not the run of the mill Bowie. Nice.
