I used the stealthy "buy it now" option when I saw this lot pop up thinking I'd make a killing reselling them. Turns out the only ones worth selling are the ones I want to keep, so . . . I have to rethink this whole axe flipping venture of mine.

They're all a little ragged but there is still some good steel in there. The second from the top on the left is stamped --S.MFG.CO. and I like it. Two down from that is a small MANN which I also like. The top left is really the one I knew I wanted out of the bunch. It's a Collins Old Timer 3 1/2lber.

Someone welded what looks like S T on the back. Any ideas? Forrest Service? Competition? They're pretty bold.

I'm curious to know what you paid for the lot, doesn't really matter but I use the cost of lots sometimes to ball park the value of individual pieces so as to let me know if got a good money deal.
Not the same as the intrinsic value of the piece, I might place a high value on it because of some personal reason, I know this isn't answering your question, but since you have a job lot of bits I wanted to post this question about value.

Hope you can answer this by not stating the actual price you paid, which is probably a violation of forum rules.

Hope this ? Don't get everybody's shorts in a knot

I've had the flu for three days so my question is most likely incoherent
Double post, now I've done it!!!! Argh

It arrived to my door for $81. I figured $8 a head was a bargain, especially when you consider the Mann and the Collins.

Sorry to put this here.

To whomever was interested in the E.&S. MFG. CO.,

I can't find your message anywhere and I forgot who you were. But to answer, I think I'll hold onto it for now. If you PM me again, I'll be sure to save your info in the event that I decide otherwise.

Okay thanks everyone for your forgiveness.

I've seen a good Emerson Stevens go for a hundred dollars. I've got a couple myself but one needs smithy work. Finest axes along with the other maine makers.

I call BS on that.

I'm only kidding, BTW. I have yet to acquire a Maine axe.

It's a cool pattern and in decent shape (a little pitted). Has some other markings on the bottom as shown below. Any idea of age? I'm off to research. Also finished up the connie haft today and made a sheath last night. No idea on those markings, huh? Weird that someone made them as raised as they are.

All the oakland axes have that stuff on the bottom. the letter in front of the eye in purported to be the smith's mark, and the number on the back the year of manufacture. Not sure if these are valid or not, but they are present on almost every oakie.

Thanks for the info G-pig. So it looks like a 32, but someone stamped B J L in the same area and the J is directly over the 3.

I concur with G-pig on the numbers stamped under on Maine axes. Plus it has that blocky wedge type look to it. I like the handle you put on it. I had a BBB Michigan that had a number stamped in it with a punch. I guessed that it belonged to a logging camp or outfit. Maybe to keep it from being stolen.

I have a lot of Maine axes with the weight stamped on the front face of the axe. Not all Maine axes are the blocky wedge type. Most E&S's I have have a W stamped in the bottom of the axe.

All Mainers:

Nice axes coop. I have one Maine axe weight stamped on the face but I meant an axe with weight stamped under the poll is likely a Maine axe.
