Well guys, my new bowie from Bailey Bradshaw,MS is completed an Bailey was nice enough to send me a pic.

The pattern that I chose for this knife was a picture of a DE Henry "Shiveley Repro" from a Weyer "points of interest" book.
That particular knife has haunted me for many years and since I didnt have a Bradshaw knife, what better way to satisfy two urgings at once!

Here it is.

I am not sure on the exact particulars but I do know that:
The blade is somewhere between 11-12", the handle is checkered (by the maker)African Blackwood with a silver escutcheon plate.

Look at that temper line!

I will try and get a better picture once the knife arrives.

My hats off to you Mr. Bradshaw!

Very, very nice!:)

Coincidentally, at the time I saw your post, I noticed that Mr. Bradshaw is "lurking" out there in BladeForum land. Perhaps he can chime in as well!

You got a winner there. Bailey is one of the underpriced finds in the M.S. market. Good pickup.

Hubba Hubba!
Love those classics.
Lookin forward to a close up of the handle :)

Terrific Bowie! Bailey does really exceptional work. Love it!

Cheers,

Thanks for the post Anthony! I appreciate all the compliments as well.

This was a fun project. I had a little trouble getting the blade width from existing stock sizes, so I ended up welding four bars of 1084 together to get the amount of material I needed for the size blade Anthony wanted. It is 1 3/4" wide and 11.5" long. The swedge is ground on one side only and is sharp. The temper line didn't show completely in the photo, but it turns back at the tip to encompass the sharpened clip. The handle is hand checkered African blackwood with a sterling escutcheon plate. The ferrule and finial are heat colored mild steel. Guard is stainless.

The blade is clay tempered, so the temper line is very wavy giving it more interest than a straight line.

What did you have in mind for the next one Anthony?

Bailey,

That's a monster bowie, nice work. If possible I'd like to see a close up of the handle. I love checkering, especially on a 1911...:D Was it necessary to etch the blade to see the temperline? I'm not sure how it works when a blade is clay tempered.

I did etch the blade to bring out the line more. It was visible once I sanded it to 220. I bring the finish up to 600, then dip my sandpaper in ferric chloride and briskly sand the blade to get an even coating on the blade. This keps it from etching too deep and producing a stippled transition area. I then neutralize the acid and bring the finish to 1000.

Knowing Bailey's work the way I do, that thing has got to be flawless. Make sure you bring that bowie to Atlanta!

Anthony, I would never steal it. However, I might try to trade you out of it. :D
