Hello Knife People!

I’m excited to officially introduce my new brand, Accipiter Knife and Tool, and to announce that I have partnered with David Mary to produce my first designs!

“Accipiter” is derived from the Roman word for hawk, and is currently a genus of predatory birds within the order Accipitriformes, known primarily for their habit of hunting and eating other birds.

I’ve been “designing” knives since a very young age, and with information gathered primarily from BladeForums (in particular Stacy E. Apelt - Bladesmith Stacy E. Apelt - Bladesmith - thanks Stacy!), I was able to forge my first knife sometime around 2006. I was just starting out as a California State Park Peace Officer (Ranger) and I wanted a tough, small, boot-carried “rescue knife” to wear on the job. I couldn’t afford the knives I saw for sale and liked for the role, so after much research I made the knife (and sheath) below and carried it for about 19 years on duty.

The second knife I made, also forged from 1/4” 5160, was made as a gift for my good friend Mike:

Mike’s knife is the inspiration for my first “production model”, the Northern Gosshawk:

Plasma!

I designed this knife with the woods in mind. It’s somewhere between a large knife and short machete, at a bit over 17” overall length in 1/8” AEB-L.

Here it is after heat treatment, along with my second model, the Sharp-Shinned Hawk (AKA Sharpie or Flying Puukko):

The Sharpie is inspired by knives like the Sendero and the guarded Puukko knives by Mora and Marttiini. I plan to offer them in 0.09” (~3/32) AEB-L, (although these prototypes are in 15N20 because it was more quickly available at the time).

It has been very interesting and educational to confer with David about these designs and knife making in general. He has a deep understanding of these tools and I feel extremely lucky to be working with him. Thanks again David Mary David Mary for your kindness and patience. 🙏

These prototypes are still in need of grinding, handles and sheathes, and I’m looking forward to showing off the finished product.

I’ll be adding to this thread as I get updates, and please feel free to ask any questions (or offer any suggestions/advice) below.

Cheers,
Shawn Wilson

I want a "Gosh-Hawk" variant model .

That be a N. Goshawk ,as above, except with a very long , two-hand handle ! ☺️

Yup, and about 4" of the spine ,at the tip , needs a sharp swedge .
Ha - I like it! If David is game to make a variant I’m in. How long of a handle are we thinking here?? 🤔
I’ll get my graph paper out…

I’ll have to change the blade/handle angle to accommodate the longer handle and still have proper edge presentation…

I have no objections to such a build, but I want to get caught up on a number of projects before I open the book on builds requiring new blanks to be cut and heat treated. It's fine to DM me to discuss the details, but I won't be engaging to any significant degree with said discussions, taking deposits, or making anything official for a while.
