Picked up this on the 'bay for $38 shipped. Looked pretty good.

closer inspection finds these marks. Guessing maybe repairs.

I'm hoping whatever it is won't affect the performance of this one. I'll have to go easy on hanging this. I'm guessing broad axes don't take the abuse that regular choppers do. or am I wrong.

thanks for looking

I really wouldn't be the least bit worried about it. Looks like a very nice axe.

They look like crude forge welds. But that pocket looks like it once held an inclusion - perhaps a piece of forge coal? It's certainly compromised though it might still function normally anyway.

I give them a good flip with a finger out near the edge and hope for an obvious clear ringing as an indication that it's solid. They are not repairs but indications of the welding done when the axe was forged.

I think you're right that broad-axes don't take the impact that choppers do. They're more dropped than swung.

Sharpened this one up. Took well to a file. Used my 12" prefd file and new simonds multi-kut file. used various stones to hone.

I noticed a straight line on the bit, from heel to toe on your broad axe. Do you think its laminated steel?
Were broad axes laminated? I don't recall seeing the before.

Thanks for sharing it with us, Tom
