I have a new guy question. I recently got interested in knives and got the Norton’s economy stone from the depot and have been getting, what I think are some decent blades. I can make thin paper curl but it won’t shave hair. I think the edge I’m putting on looks to be convex although I was trying for the flat V grind.

I’ve been practicing only on cheap knives and I recently got a 110. What should the bevel be on this knife (convex, flat, other)? Is there a problem sharpening the way I am? I would like to get new stones at some point but does anyone get consistently sharp edges on a economy stone? It seems to be ok but I have no idea. Just doesn’t polish up.

I use a diamond impregnated steel to sharpen everything......Ultra sharp edge all the time.

cliff, Welcome to the Buck forum . Does the stone you purchased say Norton on the box ? What color is the stone and what grit ? Is it a coarse/ fine two grit type ? If the sharpened knife will cut curleys from newspaper it should shave arm hair . If not then the edge is not sharp enough or has a burr . Do you have a magnifier of 5-10X to examine the edge ? When a edge looks convex it usually means the bevel is has not been held straight during sharpening . But even a crooked bevel can be sharp and cut well . Maybe think about a guide . Let me know about the stone and I'll answer your question on sharpening the 110 . DM

That stone I've not seen . It appears to be silicon carbide . Its perhaps not fired/ mfg. to the same standard as Norton's entire line . It should sharpen Buck's 110 and able to give you a arm hair shaving edge . Sharpening technique has a play in the equation . You also might try stroping the knife some on the back of your leather belt . That helps to refine the edge for shaving hair and minimize sharpening errors . DM

Sure thing cliff . A lot of us use the Norton India stone . A combination coarse/fine stone . In the 2X8" size its only runs 20$ with shipping . A lot use diamond . But before you go and purchase a lot of sharpening equipment learn to use the one you have with a leather strop and see the results that can be obtained . Perfect your technique then a year or two down the road decide . Enjoy your 110 and let us know how its going . Theres always someone here to lend a friendly hand . DM
