I just became a proud new owner of a 1977 vintage Buck 110. My cousin found it at my grandmother's house. I ended up trading him a bottle of darn good rum (already opened) and help him drink some of it. I'm hoping I did good, and from the little I've read I think I did. Here are some pictures of it.

I keep on reading about 2 dot, 3 dot and 4 dot bucks. What is the significance of the models, and where are the dots?

Diverg,
All Buck 110s have a stamp on the blade tang. The earliest 110s had a stamp of just "BUCK"; then in 1967 the stamp changed to read "BUCK" with "USA" below that. In about 1972 the stamp changed to read "BUCK" with "110" below and "USA" below the "110". In about 1975 or early 1976, there was a change to "*110*". The dots before and after the "110" indicate that there was a change in the shape of the tang and lockbar. Later the stamp changed to "*110**" which indicates a change in the rocker material, and finally the stamp became "**110**" to indicate a change in the blade steel. In 1986, yearly date codes started and the "dot" indications weren't used any more. In summary, the "dots" were used to indicate design changes that aren't readily apparent just by looking at the knife. Also, the "dot" symbols help figure out the approximate age of the knife for knives made before 1986.

One more thing, before someone starts knit-picking. The "BUCK" stamp on the earliest 110s actually was not on the tang; it was on the top edge of the blade itself and oriented horizontally,

Great score! Especially for an opened bottle of rum which you ended up celebrating with!

ya done good pilgram!
now wellcome to the desease we call buck feaver !
it will not kill you but might make it some time difcult with the family lol
that it was from your grand father is a great thing..
you can send it to buck and they will make it like new or
keep it as is..
i would recomend useing it a little for a few days
and if you like the way it fits in to your knife useing life
get another one and put the grand father up for thoes days of memorys
if you like the classics find a two liner to a 3 liner with dots
or perhaps what i think is the best of the classics is the
3 dot .... you will like them
the new ones are great also
you can find them in damascus and s30v or cpm145 or other steels
carefull you might become a collector like many of us here are!
post your thoughts from useing it
and good luck !

Thanks for the responses. The knife either belonged to my uncle or my grandfather. According to the receipt he paid $50 for 2 knives and got a 50% discount for a total paid $25 for 2. I'm thinking he bought 2, kept one and gave the other to my grandfather. Still pretty cool. I got a clerk at Walmart to sharpen it, but it still doesn't seem as sharp as my dad's newer model.

Congrats. Great find. Buck knives will not disappoint you. I particularly like the older ones.

Good summation of the "dots" bertyl. Thanks.

Welcome. You can't go wrong with a 110 and Buck will take care of it for life if you ever need them to.

Ahh makes me sad. My dad had a buck 110 from the late 60's that he carried as a kid. It's currently MIA. I have great memories of that knife and I'm going to get him one for Christmas.
