I just got a new Buck 110 with S30V blade from cabelas. Its a really nice knife. I have a couple questions someone might be able to help me out with. First, there is some side to side play in the blade, is this normal or unacceptable. This is my first 110 so I don't have anything to compare it to. Second, one of the brass pins on the handle is raised much higher on both sides than the other 3, is this normal or unacceptable? Should I return it to Cabelas for a replacement? Thanks.

I'd return it for exchange. A tiny bit of blade play is normal in many factory knives, but it shouldn't be noticable when using. The uneven pin is unusual. Looks like you got one that slipped by QC. No biggie, they'll probably exchange no questions asked.

Best Wishes and good luck,
Bob

I agree, I have that same one from Cabelas, and it has absolutely no blade play at all, locks up like a steel vault.

You maybe just got that 1 that slipped through.

I've got a number of 110's and they vary from almost zero play to quite a bit of side to side play. My Cabelas S30V 110 is one of the tighter ones.

I would send it back if you are not happy with it. I'm sure they will exchange it for you.

Tom

Thanks everyone for the advise. I call Cabelas and get a RMA and send it in for exchange. Other than those 2 little things, its seems like a great knife. How do they get the blade that color, almost looks like its blued.

I agree about returning it if the blade play is excessive.

There are only three brass pins (attaching the scales) on each side. The fourth pin (not brass), the center pin at the bottom, is raised higher than the brass pins. That is normal. If one of the brass pins is higher, that is not normal. Well, actually, there are two more brass pins. They are through the bolsters and they should be flush.

edited to add photo. Sorry about the quality of the photo. I took it for inventory purposes. This is my old two dot (bought in 1980) 110 but the new ones have the pins in the same places.

edited again for spelling

Going to check my 110s...

Yes, on both of my 110s the steel pin is larger and protrudes farther than the brass pins. If that's the one you're talking about... Neither has any blade play at all.

I don't have the Cabela's one, but I have two 110's and a 112. Neither has any side to side blade play. Silve pin is higher than the brass ones.

I sent it back today. The pin that was higher was the second one in from the blade so I guess this is the silver one, I didn't look at it that close. I gather that one is normal to extend a little farther than the others so I won't worry about it when it returns. The side to side blade play was more than I was comfortable with accepting so hopefully the next one with be OK. Thanks everyone for the help.

While open my 110 open locks up as solid as anything, however, in the closed position it has a little side to side play. Is this normal?

I never noticed before but all four of my 110s (1980, 2005, Cabela's & custom) are like that. Solid open, blade play closed. Must be normal. :)

In fact, all my lockbacks seem to be like that.

Yes, my collection of 110's runs from brand new productions and custom shop models, to late 60's earliy 70's "users" and "mints", and they all have that.

howdy all... yep i have some old and new ones and all have some play when closed and most lock solid open tho ... i belive it has to do with the design ... some have some play in open and i need to send them in for a tune up and factory edgeing again...

oh yes - confederate,
did you get the 110 shots i sent you ? the hole blades are my latest addations.... want to do some balde swaps like sv30 and demaskas but i understand buck is at least another 30 days from accepting knives for swap...? btw: i cant post but if you can ...can you post the pic of the 'herd' for me? later dave

I would return it.I don't think there is reason to worry if there is a little side play in the closed position though.Allmine have that problem/feature.

Sure, give me a few minutes and I'll get a good picture up.

Here you go, this is a picture of 334dave's Buck collection, with a few other cool knives also.

Very nice 334dave...
What is the all black knife forth from the bottom on the left? Is it a 560 or some other knife I have not seen?

Just about all folders will have some blade play when closed, because the pivot bar isn't as tight when it's closed as it is open (helps with the opening and locking).

334 is the middle fixed a 122 Nemo?

I've been wanting to get me one of those.

In his e-mails with me, I think he said it was a 121 "The General" model.
