I received this Buck 111 in the mail yesterday. The tag on the flap of the box it came in indicates it was manufactured on 05/15/2008 but there is no symbol stamped into the blade after the model number to nail it down for sure. Also, when I bought and ordered it, the handles were advertised as being Ironwood but I don't think they are. Everything on this knife appears to be nickle/silver -- bolsters, liners, etc..

Other that the tag on the flap of the knife box, is there a way to pin down the date of manufacture for sure?

What material are the scales made of on this knife?

Why didn't Buck stamp the symbol for the year of manufacture on the blades of these knives?

What does the WSSP-1 on the tag stand for?

I DID research this knife over the last few days waiting for it to arrive. There is one thread that has been locked that has a lot of information but there seems to be two or more factions that have conflicting information. Can anyone pin down the Buck 111 facts down with a bit more certainty? I don't care about the Aluminum Handled Buck 111s -- only these wood(?) handled 111s.

This has come up before. I think that there were a bunch that went out that year without date stamps, (I have at least two of them) and there were also some 110 with out the stamps.

Some were shipped out in boxes with the same number as the ironwood models but were just the standard scales.

I bought several of these on the 'bay. I had the same questions about 'em. Sent an email to Buck to ask about the handles. The reply indicated they were built as part of a 'factory build-out', using the standard laminated wood scales (not ironwood). The 'factory build-out' implies that these were produced from spare parts on hand (which might explain the lack of a date mark on some). I did get a few of these with the Idaho date mark on the blade (don't remember what year that implies, although it could be '08).

(ETA: Oops. I peeked at the 'Date Codes' sticky; the Idaho mark is for 2005)

The problem is made more confusing by that UPC code on the box. There's an 'IW' in the code sequence, which I think at one time was actually reserved for ironwood-handled versions of the 111 (from the Custom shop, I assume). The email reply I got from Buck knives indicated that they've done this on occasion, to apparently save them the trouble of creating a unique UPC code for non-standard, limited-run type items. They just basically use a code that's generally applicable, if not entirely specific to that model.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

I also received this new Buck 112 but have no questions on it as it has a blade stamp to match the date on the box tag and the 112s are very common. Still a nice little knife.

Ed, Yes weve discussed this many times . But I'll do it again for you . In late 2007 Buck was gearing up for their first run of knives when they were informed that a snafu had occured from the company they order their stamps from . The company could not supply Buck with the stamp on time (Jan. 1st) for the first run of knives to go out . So, the decision was made at Buck to proceed in manufactoring the knives and send them out with no year stamp on the blade . This is why many models are found without a stamp as those came from early 2008 . The rest of the info. here looks correct . DM

Thats really cool Seanski-havent seen that one before

Great clear pics Ed, enjoy the 111-one of my favorites

the 111 was a great looking knife
a lot of ebayers were selling the build out as a
real iron wood and a lot of buyers got taken!
some even used a iron wood handled knife picture
to sell them..
i found out as i bought one and it was the build out
the seller would not accept the returned item
at all ....
hope fully the 111 will be picked up by some out fit
wanting a unique knife and will be for sale again
even if only as a LE or Custom Shop model
